April Update
Spring is here and the calls about wildlife in need are increasing every week. While 2020 was AIWC’s busiest year in our history, 2021 is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, we are seeing an increase in admissions of animals by 7% compared to this time in 2020.

On April 20, AIWC will celebrate its 28th anniversary and this is all in thanks to you, AIWC’s volunteers, staff, and community. Over 32,000 animals have been cared for since AIWC’s founding. We truly could not live out our mission without your support, thank you!

The 50/50 cash raffle fundraiser came to an end in March and thanks to your help we reached the $20k jackpot. We hope to have another 50/50 cash raffle in June and will keep you updated.

It won’t be long now until we start getting calls about baby hares. A reminder, if you see a baby hare please leave him/her right there unless the baby is injured. More information on the natural history of baby hares can be found on the poster below (high-resolution version here), and we have similar resources available on our website here.

I hope you had a lovely Easter weekend and are enjoying the milder weather. With COVID-19 cases rising I hope you and yours continue to be safe and well. Have a lovely April and see you in May for another E-News.

Sincerely,

Holly Lillie
Executive Director.

AIWC Updates
Found unable to move and not responding to anything him around him, this North American porcupine was rescued and brought to AIWC for care. On examination it was found he was suffering from head trauma and a potential upper respiratory infection.

With supportive care (antibiotics, fluids) he is on the mend and is looking brighter every day. We are hopeful he will be strong enough to move to an outdoor enclosure soon and be released not long after that. Thank you for helping care for animals in need like this porcupine!

Bird collisions with residential glass surfaces account for a significant number of bird deaths annually – especially during migration seasons. In order for birds to ‘see the glass’ and not collide subtle visible markers must be applied to exterior glass surfaces in problem areas. A new highly-effective ‘Do-It-Yourself’ Kit is now available from Feather Friendly® Technologies. It allows you to apply the same solution at home that has proven to be successful in thousands of square feet of commercial building installations.
