Hi Steve,
DEC, 20, 2020
I took photos of what I believe to be ghosts and scenes created by them. One of my early pictures (was taken) by a dear friend of mine who passed on 12 years ago. I knew instantly it was him – he was diving with me in the Isle of Man
When I put my hand in a hole and nearly lost it to a giant Conger eel. He called me Conger Bob after this. See the attached photo taken outside my home! I know it’s me I recognize the mask I used to wear.

Hi Steve,
Several years ago I had a premonition whilst driving on a road near my home. There was a near miss car crash due to a badly parked car and I just knew that if I came down this road at night I would have a serious accident around the same location.
Anyway I did not take much notice as I knew little about premonitions, but 3 months after I had a serious accident due to a badly parked car in a similar spot which resulted in my partner Staff dying.
I was devastated and needed some help. Anyway I ended up visiting a Spiritual church where two Ladies listened to me and gave me an emotional support , and help. I was shocked that they knew that I had planned to go there to see them,I never told anybody!
I went to some services and on one occasion a Rev Alan Rawnsley was visiting and told me that the spirit world had a job for me tied to a lifeline interest of mine.
Several weeks later I went to an old house called Bolling Hall which was involved in the English civil war. The commander of the Royalist forces slept in a room where he claimed to have walked up in the night to see an apparition of a young lady/angel that said “pity poor Bradford”. This caused him to rescind his order for his soldiers to kill everyone in Bradford.
Anyway on my visit with a lady I met at the church I took over 300 photo’s hoping to get something but I did not get much, whereas my lady friend took about 20 and got a few orb’s. I was determined to get more pictures, and went up to the rooms where the apparition took place and I called out loud that if I did not get anything in the next picture I would never return.
Then I took a picture and was flabbergasted! The picture had 15 big orb’s with several having faces, head and shoulder, foot, and figures of people from long ago.
The pictures are on display at Bolling Hall now. Soon after this I started seeing spirits and I was determined to photograph them that took me a long time but now I have hundreds if not thousands. A display of about 40 at Bolling Hall, Many times I have been able to request an orb on say a painting at this old house with immediate results.
On a visit with a medium and use of a EMF meter where we contacted the spirit of the Earl of Newcastle that had slept in the room, he let me know that the picture above is the same lady/angel that he saw, by lighting up all 6 lights on the EMF meter for a yes.
I have had a large number of experiences on my way but the above is how this all started. I have experienced some very bad spirits on my way and it amazes me how much noise and power, to lift things they can muster. Let me know if you need any further information. The incident of my best friend death made me a sensitive.
Best Regards, Rob
Dec , 22 – 2020
The first picture of the Conger Eel and me before it bit me was just a scene that I believe a dear friend of mine who died 10 years ago created. All I saw was a type of mist or fog appearing. The scene is from a scuba expedition I was on with my friend to the Isle of Man say about 15 years ago and as I say this big eel bit me.
I did put my hand in its hole thinking I’d seen a lobster. Good job I had a glove on. Anyway my friend started something off with a nickname of Conger Bob that’s stuck for a long time. The camera I find best is a Nokia camera phone Lumina 1020 But I am still experimenting. I have cameras up to Medium format Phase one with digital And film backs. Not sure about the cat – I must have inadvertently attached the wrong picture there.
I Can’t remember if I sent you this one of Sarah Agnes taken at her grave in Todmorden. I’ll send you a few more of various subjects. My partner was 34. I have seen her once since. I often get Orb’s come into my lounge at night that I believe are spirit related and I can request these to certain positions – say over the Conger Bob photo I have on my wall and this they will do.
I can do this at a place called Bolling Hall with ties to our Civil War. Here I believe the Orb is The Earl of Newcastle that commanded the Northern Royalist Army and stayed at Bolling Hall. I ask him to position his Orb on his adversaries portrait painting ( Thomas Fairfax commander of the Parliamentary army ). I can provide you with photos of these which to most people is impossible! Hope to hear from you next week, in meantime have a good Christmas or as good as we can have anyway,
Regards, Rob

Hi Steve, Dec, 23, 2020
The image of a spirit seems to follow a buildup of orbs like the one attached. (2)
This happens very quickly and it’s all about the instant the shutter activates that dictates what is recorded. I have seen mists form in a sort of small cloud which may be a different way of the spirit showing itself or whatever it decides or is capable of doing. I have seen them in photos of rippled water in the edge of a river, also a friend of mine took a photo in his kitchen and a spirit was evident in the steam from the kettle. I have been wondering if the Angel of Mons seen by thousands of soldiers in the First World War formed in the dust/smoke cloud over the battlefield.

I have never smoked (no that’s a lie but it was not cigs and not for long). These pictures are not caused by cigarette smoking. Or pictures superimposed in a dark room. I have a cat that’s about 12 months old now and is good company.
I went out one night a week or so ago to bring him in and was shocked to see two identical cats. Think I have the right one here now! I took a photo as attached and there’s (cat picture) an orb between them just suspect that there’s some other involved with this prank?
In the meantime have a good Christmas (or as good as can be expected in the present Covid restrictions) and I will look forward to hearing from you,

Hi Steve, Dec, 24, 2020
I forgot to mention that I went on for few” Ghost nights” hunt with a medium friend of mine Pauline. She is very good medium and paranormal investigator, and we have had some amazing experiences like a table moving and going of the steps on its own. We have made contact with some spirits by way of an EMF meter with 6 lights and use this for answers to questions i.e. 6 lights mean a yes, 3 a maybe and one a no. By this we have by a bit of intuition and guessing communicated a story.
Some of these stories we have been able to verify from historical records. But the message has given more detail. There was a couple that lived at this Hall in Bradford with their daughter. Her father was a butler or similar. His daughter became pregnant from someone and kept it secret and stayed quiet about it, leaving the baby with a friend.
When the father found out, he was angry and mad at her, raged and went and collected the baby took it down the garden at the Hall in Bradford and put a sword through it and killed the baby. The daughter Nancy jumped off the tower to her death.
It was Very upsetting and dramatic for the mother. Anyway a week or so after this an electrician doing some work at the Hall found a sword hidden under the floorboards. It has blood on it. Not long after this I was taking photos one night and something made me look to the tower. I grabbed a photo of something falling. I will attach this photo.
I have the original file so I had to take a picture of the print , it shows the result. All together a bit too much of a coincidence for me!
Try to use your magnifying glass if you can to see the pictures.
These are some of the pictures that Robert Crabtree took with his friend medium Pauline ,both are ,paranormal investigators.
This picture Shows from the back right a scuba diver face ,then upper left a foot with a head of an eel!, under the foot a demonic looking lion face , with a broken circles in the centre or a gate / portal .
This picture shows an appreciation of an angel, or an entity going
out of this wall to outside with small wings.
This picture of a graveyard shows a ghost entity holding in her hand a smaller entity of white orb , the 50 years old lady Sarah Agnes wife of james davenport, who died march , 10, 1927 , and of Elizabeth Alice, also a wife of james davenport who died on march 2nd, 1909, age 27 years in one grave and beside them the grave of thier husband James Davenport, who died in August 1, 1956, at age 76.
To me this spirit the older lady trying to take care of the younger lady spirit holding the white orb to present her to the husband beside them . Or it represent a spiritual gift of light to his soul to keep him in peace. As in many tradition and religions the prayers transformed to ring of light or orbs of light and it goes to those who we praying for and give them peace and blessing.
This picture make me cry as it shows that even in the spirit words , love, caring and kindness exists among the spirits who lived in love on this earth.
The cat on the left side is robert cat, and the other one on top right is the one he found at one night, and you can see the white orb beside it. The thing about this orb is like is coming from the ground as it is not fully circle as in case of dust orbs, If it was a gas orb it will be in different color of the ring, usually more orbs and different sizes .
If it was a flashlight we will should see the angle fracture. Sometimes a spirit who loved cats while they are a life, they love them after life too and they can come close to them because they know cats and other pets can sense them and feel them.
This picture is the most amazing from Robert, it shows the entity rising or dancing, or is trying to enter from the portal or the gate, just like the first picture if you remember and go back to the first picture you will see the broken circles , crescent ,portal or gates.
Or as part of spirit formation they can use any energy around from the gases, heat, dust and other materials as it contains electric charges to help them manifest and make connection.I wish i can have a story behind each picture . where was taken?
The name of the grave called Todmorden grave.
Any lake or river close by? is the house abandoned? do you hear any voices and sound with those spirits. You can see part of the spirit face formation and head, her hair as white strikes on the side.
Steve Ramsey, PhD. you can email me your pictures, videos and stories to publish them here with your name please; thanks

My extra information and explanation for this story by Robert , and the key factors in his story for general interest.
1- Conger EEl;
European conger Eels have an average adult length of 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in), a maximum known length of around 2.133 m (7 ft 0 in) (possibly up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) for the largest specimens), and maximum weight of roughly 72 kg (159 lb), making them the largest eels in the world by weight.
The body is very long, without scales. The color is usually grey, but can also be blackish. The belly is white. A row of small white spots is aligned along the lateral line. The head is almost conical, and slightly depressed. The snout is rounded and prominent, with lateral olfactory holes. The large gill openings are in the lateral position.
Conger eels usually live amongst rocks in holes, or “eel pits”, sometimes in one hole together with moray eels. They come out from their holes at night to hunt. These nocturnal predators mainly feed on fish, and other marine life. Congers can be aggressive to humans, and large specimens can pose a danger to divers.
2-Aln Rawnsley, the spiritualist church
On Saturday 17th December 2016, Stockport Spiritualist Church was overjoyed to host the Service Of Acceptance of our Vice President Debbie Ridgway, as an Officiant into the Ministry of The Spiritualist National Union.
The church was packed with Ministers, church members, members from other churches, relatives and friends of Debbie. The atmosphere was charged with excitement, spiritual emotion and a palpable abundance of love for Debbie. Minister Alan Rawnsley conducted a wonderful spiritual and joyous service, and Minister Janet Cookson was our service Chairperson.
Lots of beautiful words of well-wishing and congratulations was bestowed on Debbie, but more importantly people present was able to voice and share their thoughts and experiences on how Debbie had made a meaningful contribution in their life with her guidance, support and friendship. Minister David Bruton President of the SNU who was unable to be there, sent his personal well wishes and congratulations by letter to Debbie which was read out loud to the congregation.
The Service Of Acceptance signifies the investiture into a religious ministry and the act of granting pastoral authority, this would include various official duties for the Officiant. An example of this would mean Debbie can officiate at Marriages, Funerals and Naming services to name just a few of the different duties encompassed in the Officiant role.
Becoming an Officiant means Debbie has been welcomed into the open arms of the Ministry and endorses the never ending love, support and inspiration from the Spirit World, it also signifies the first step in becoming a Minister within the SNU.

4-ORBS;
Paranormal believers theorize orbs represent the energy patterns of Entities . This theory contends each spirit orb can contain the energy of one or more entities. The ghost orbs are believed to manifest as glowing spheres of gold, green, blue, or crimson. Conclusions are then drawn in regard to the size and color of the orbs, some show dust orbs and the dust orbs usually have different rims.
Another school of thought is explained ; The theory states orbs are visible representations of angels. They points out some spirit orbs contain a pattern like a spiderweb, and a few even contain faces . Believers of this viewpoint cite the predominance of photo orbs taken during special family gatherings, worship services, at spiritual places, of victims later saved from accidents, and of people who are critically ill. Wedding photos often reveal orbs hovering over a bride, groom, or a newborn. However, if you ask Orb Zone Theorists, these orbs are simply dust particles reflecting light. Those who believe in the supernatural argue the orbs are guardian angels protecting and blessing their wards. Sure there are many form of orbs can be caused by dust particles, gas from the graves, and lakes but for sure there are many light orbs of spirit energies and they are different than those of the dust orbs , look and study the rims under a magnifying glass and you will know.
Yet another theory proposes orbs depict spirit guides. Many ancient traditions teach spirit guides are beings that have evolved beyond the need to incarnate. The higher self chooses a guide to help you through life. Spirit guides provide comfort, advice, and direction to individuals, all in keeping with one’s higher purpose. Guides appear in such disparate traditions as Gnostic Christianity, Native American spirituality, and Eastern religions.
Believers in the spirit guide theory of orb activity hope the many orbs photographed around people represent their spirit guides. Guides rarely appear in corporeal form, choosing instead to communicate through meditation and dreams. People who believe the spirit guide theory of orbs hope they have somehow glimpsed and recorded their unique guide using modern technology.
5-The spirit of Earl, New Castle- UK. The monster of Glamis, The gray Lady is Lady Janet Dougla.
The Queen Mother, as recounted in several biographies, did speak of the legend and did comment on how it was a forbidden topic in the family. She also recounted people seeing the Grey Lady. Also, family members told stories of servants bringing dinner trays through the castle but to whom and where they could not determine.
The description of the boy was given several times and it is clear he was physically deformed but whether he had mental or speech issues have never been known. The Queen Mother acknowledged haunting in the Castle but by her accounts it was happy, jolly home and her family loved theatricals and playing pranks.
When war came the family did not hesitate to turn their imposing castle into a hospital and care facility for the troops. Many photos survive showing the warmth which accompanied them doing so. And the Queen Mother said many times her mother had a talent for turning the castle into a comfy home, a talent the Queen Mother often received praise for, including from none other than Eleanor Roosevelt, who said homemaking was the Queen Mother’s special genius
That awful secret was once the talk of Europe. From perhaps the 1840s until 1905, the Earl’s ancestral seat at Glamis Castle, in the Scottish lowlands, was home to a “mystery of mysteries”—an enigma that involved a hidden room, a secret passage, solemn initiations, scandal, and shadowy figures glimpsed by night on castle battlements.
The conundrum engaged two generations of high society until, soon after 1900, the secret itself was lost. One version of the story holds that it was so terrible that the 13th Earl’s heir flatly refused to have it revealed to him. Yet the mystery of Glamis (pronounced “Glarms”) remains, kept alive by its association with royalty (the heir was grandfather to Elizabeth II) and by the fact that at least some members of the Bowes-Lyon family insisted it was real.
Sir Walter Scott, the popular 19th-century novelist, was the first man to tell of the ‘secret’ of Glamis.
Glamis Castle is mentioned by Shakespeare—Macbeth, that most cursed of characters, WAS THANE OF GLAMIS
—and in 1034 the Scottish King Malcolm II died there, SOME SAID HE WAS KILLED.. But the present castle was constructed only in the 15th century, around a central tower whose walls are, in places, 16 feet thick. Glamis has been the family seat of the Strathmore Earls since then, but by the late 18th century it lay largely empty, its owners preferring to live somewhere less drafty, less isolated and less melancholy.
In their absence, Glamis was left in the care of a factor, or estate manager, and it was to this factor that a young Walter Scott applied in 1790 to spend a night in one of its rooms. Scott became the first of several writers to note the castle’s oppressive atmosphere. “I must own,” he wrote in an account published in 1830, “as I heard door after door shut, after my conductor had retired, I began to consider myself as too far from the living and somewhat too near to the dead.” What was more, the great novelist added, Glamis was said to hide a secret room—a useful addition to any residence in 15th-century Scotland, where violence was seldom far away. Its location was known only to the Earl, his factor and his heir.
In one sense, however, the most interesting thing about Scott’s account is what it doesn’t say. The novelist wrote nothing to suggest that the castle’s hidden chamber had an occupant. Yet, within half a century of his visit, it had begun to be rumored that the room concealed an unknown captive—a prisoner who had been held there all his life. You can read allot regarding this history from different points of view. Spirit of Earl Newcastle and that of Glamis monster, you can Google and search to know more.
The Monster of Glamis could have been born deformed, and mentally handicapped, or born deformed but had all his marbles. He might mentally have been okay, but was deformed so it would have been an embarrassment to the family if he was publicly seen, and they certainly even if he was mentally sane and intelligent, couldn’t let him marry anyone to produce more heirs that looked like him.
Now, someone mentioned a curse. The gray Lady is Lady Janet Douglas, who was executed for witchcraft. This could have been some sort of political move by the King of Scotland, or maybe she really did practice it. Even ordinary people were accused of being witches or heretics, just look at the Witch trials throughout Europe, plus the Inquisition of the Catholic Church, especially in Spain. Some day the secret could come out.
6- Angry spirits, hearing voices, seen things aren’t thier =
Psychosis
Hearing voices, seeing things, and unusual beliefs
This section is mostly about people’s experiences of hearing voices and seeing things that others around them don’t hear or see. ‘Hallucinations’, as they are often called, are what people hear, see, feel – or even smell and taste – that don’t appear to be sensed by other people. For most people that we spoke to, such experiences could be very frightening: for example, having voices say nasty things about them. However, other people talked about nice but unusual experiences, such as hearing beautiful music that no-one else could hear, or hearing a voice giving you compliments. Even so, a few people said that helpful voices could turn cruel. One person said that his voices could sometimes tell him to get better, but when he felt unwell they persecuted him.
This section is also about the unusual beliefs that people have held. For example, people have felt they were being persecuted, that MI6 was monitoring them, that the world was about to end or even that they were possessed by the Devil. Other people thought that they could communicate with famous figures who were now dead, or that they could predict things that would happen in the future. For more information about how people coped with these experiences see the ‘Strategies for everyday coping’ section.
Hearing Voices
Many people we spoke to heard voices saying different things to them. Some people heard a voice, or voices, who spoke directly to them, whilst other people heard voices talking about them. Sometimes voices said the nastiest things people thought about themselves, or were like a ‘running commentary’ on what they were doing, such as ‘Robert is rolling a cigarette’. Others felt that voices could sometimes be helpful and act as a ‘guide’ or a ‘teacher’. People sometimes heard the voice of a relative who was now dead, or the voice of someone who had abused them as a child.
7- Cats and dog, do they see spirits ?
Your cat is sleeping peacefully next to the window when it suddenly wakes up and starts looking at the ceiling as though a bird has just come in through the window. But try as you might, you can’t see anything flying around in your living room.
Or, all of sudden, your kitty settles in and stares at a wall for minutes on end as though its favorite film (The Lion King!) is being projected there. Again, you look at the wall for some kind of sign, but in vain: you see nothing that explains its sudden interest.
A lot of people claim that a cat’s heightened senses enable them to see ghosts or spirits. But before coming to the conclusion that your feline is communing with Casper, let’s take a look at how a cat’s senses work to see what’s really going on.
How cats see
When a cat starts looking this way and that, we tend to think that they’re actively searching for something. In some cases, that’s true. Maybe they saw a reflection that was only there for a second or a fly that zipped past. But it’s worth noting that, though cats have excellent night vision, their day vision is far worse than ours.
In fact, they only see two colors—shades of blue and yellow—whereas we see three. And anything from five centimeters to eight metres in front of them will appear blurry. But, instead of a third color, cats have night vision.
Cats are excellent predators. Their eyesight is very sharp in the centre of their field of vision—which enables them to focus on their targets—but blurry on the edges. So when they’re on the hunt, they never rely solely on their vision. They also make use of two other senses that are far sharper than ours: hearing and smell.
How cats hear
Our perception of the environment is very different from that of cats. Did you know that they can hear frequencies four to five times higher than we can? In fact, they have access to a range of ultrasounds that are inaudible to humans because of their high frequency.
So when your cat starts looking frantically in every direction for something that doesn’t appear to be there, it may not be looking for something but trying to identify where a sound is coming from. It could be a bat flying outside and emitting ultrasounds to guide it on its flight. If your cat often does this at the beginning of the summer, now you’ll know why!
Cats can hear a mouse walking in the grass more than 10 metres away. And we’re not talking about mice wearing tap shoes and scurrying across a hardwood floor. Imagine for a second the sound that a mouse would make in grass 10 metres from where you’re standing and you’ll get an idea of your cat’s ability to pick up on frequencies that are far beyond our auditory capabilities.
This explains why cats sometimes stare at the living room wall. Maybe they hear a squirrel walking on the roof, another cat under the window, or a neighbor playing a musical instrument in a basement… with such sensitive hearing, just imagine what else they pick up on!
Not entirely convinced? Listen to this: in addition to cats having excellent auditory faculties, their ears are also specifically designed to detect where a sound is coming from.
Humans can accurately identify the source of a sound within 20 degrees, whereas cats can identify it within 5 degrees, and determine the exact height of where it’s coming from—something that we just can’t do.
So, by moving their head and ears (as they do when they appear to see ghosts), cats are able to determine where a sound is coming from. This is made possible by the size and mobility of their ears, which act like those giant satellites used in spy films to overhear someone plotting a coup in the distance. Cats would make excellent secret agents if only they could speak. Imagine everything that they could tell you about your neighbors or your teenagers!
8-TODMORDEN GAVE AREA;
The name Todmorden first appears in 1641. The town had earlier been called Tottemerden, Totmardene, Totmereden or Totmerden. The generally accepted meaning of the name is Totta’s boundary-valley, probably a reference to the valley running north-west from the town.
Alternative suggestions have been proposed, such as the speculation “maybe fancifully” that the name derives from two words for death: tod and mor (as in mort), meaning “death-death-wood”, or that the name meant “marshy home of the fox”, from the old English
‘Tod’ is an informal, shorthand name for Todmorden, often used in everyday conversation.
In 1898 Black hearth Barrow—a ring cairn monument situated above Cross Stone in Todmorden—was excavated and proved to be a site of “surpassing archaeological interest”, according to J. Lawton Russell, one of the men who carried out the excavation. Various bronze age items were discovered, including urns, a human skull, teeth and hands.
Russell contended that Blackheath Barrow was primarily a religious site, specifically intended for the “performance of funeral rites”, so no wonder why so many paranormal investigators see ghosts at that place.
The earliest written record of the area is in the Doomsday Book (1086). Settlement in medieval Todmorden was dispersed. Most people living in scattered farms or in isolated hilltop agricultural settlements.
9-Thomas Fairfax;
Fairfax was a leading Parliamentarian general in the English Civil War, who nevertheless supported the restoration of Charles II.
Thomas Fairfax, Lord Fairfax of Cameron, was born into an aristocratic family at Denton in North Yorkshire on 17 January 1612. He studied at Cambridge University and then volunteered for an expedition to fight for the Protestant cause in the Netherlands. In 1639, he served under Charles I against the Scots, and was knighted by the king, but together with his father joined the Parliamentary forces when the English Civil War broke out in 1642. He played an important part in the defeat of Royalist forces at the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644.
Early in 1645, parliament decided to form a new, more professional army and Fairfax was made commander-in-chief with Oliver Cromwell in charge of the cavalry. Fairfax moulded the New Model Army into a disciplined fighting force and in June, the army inflicted a serious defeat on the Royalists at Naseby.
Fairfax opposed the execution of Charles I in 1640. The following year he resigned his command because he did not approve of Cromwell’s war against Scotland. He then withdrew from public life. In 1660, Fairfax supported General Monck in his successful attempt to restore the monarchy. Fairfax then retired to Yorkshire and died on 12 November 1671.
10-Angel of Mons,
The Angels of Mons is a story of the reputed appearance of a supernatural entity which protected the British Army from defeat by the invading forces of the German Empire at the beginning of World War I during the Battle of Mons in Belgium on 23 August 1914.
11- The Gray Lady;
Gray ladies are the ghosts of women who reportedly died violently for the sake of love or pined away from loss of love. Gray ladies take their name from their frequent appearance as women dressed in gray. Some, however, appear clothed in white, black and brown. According to lore, gray ladies haunt a house because of their intense desire to be reunited with a loved one. Their hauntings often are associated with Poltergeist activity.
Gray ladies appear around the world. Many have been documented in England; among them are the following cases. Speke Hall near Liverpool Airport, England, for centuries the home of the Norris family, has a ghost believed to be that of Mary Norris, the daughter of the last male Norris, who died after the Restoration.
Mary reportedly was so unhappily married to Lord Sidney Beauclerk that she held her son Topham in her arms and jumped into the moat to end both their lives. Mary’s ghost is said to still rock the child’s cradle in the tapestry room. A woman who died in a shipwreck has haunted Chambercombe Manor, at Ilfracombe, North Devon, since the 17th century.
According to the legend, Alexander and William Oatway were a father and son team who used a lantern on stormy nights to lure ships to the coast. Instead of finding safety, the ships crashed on the rocks and the men would plunder them. Years later, when William was grown and the father of a married daughter, Kate Wallace, who lived in Dublin, he again lured a ship but was surprised by a survivor.
Lying on the rocks was a woman who had been so badly battered during the storm, that her face was unrecognizable. William and his wife took the woman back to the house, but she died during the night. The couple could not resist taking the dead woman’s jewelry and money belt. Two days later, the Admiralty inquired about a missing passenger who turned out to be none other than the Oatways’ own daughter, Kate.
The devastated Oatways walled up her body in a secret room and moved away. More than a century later, the secret room was discovered with the skeleton lying on a bed.
The bones were buried in a pauper’s grave, but Kate’s ghost continues to visit the house where she grew up. A few miles from Speke Hall and about seven miles from Ormskirk is Rufford Old Hall, a 15th-century manor house whose resident and anonymous gray lady allegedly died from despair.
Shortly after their wedding, her husband left for war. A soldier told her that her husband was due to return in the near future, but when he did not, the hapless girl deteriorated with each passing day. Her dying wish was for her spirit to remain in the house to wait for her husband. A marriage that never took place was the cause of death for the gray lady of Samlesbury Hall.
The house, located between Preston and Blackburn in Lancashire, belonged to the Southworth family for centuries. Sir John, the last male heir of this Catholic family, had a daughter, Dorothy, who fell in love with the heir of a nearby Protestant family. Despite Sir John’s attempts to keep them apart, the young couple met secretly and made arrangements to elope. Unbeknownst to them, one of Dorothy’s brothers was hiding in the bushes and overheard the designated time and place.
Determined to save his sister from disgrace, the brother hid on the fateful night and killed the young man and two of his friends who were helping him. Their bodies were secretly buried near Samlesbury Hall’s chapel; three skeletons were found there in the 19th century. Dorothy was sent abroad to a convent, where she is said to have gone insane, and shortly after, to have died.
The ghosts of Dorothy and her lover have been seen walking on the grounds and on the road, and embracing on the spot where the young lover is believed to have been buried. Crying and wailing have also been heard. A violent death reportedly produced the gray lady of Heskin Hall, near Blackburn. Heskin Hall often served as a hiding place for Catholic priests during the English Civil War.
During a visit by Cromwell’s Roundheads, a priest was discovered. In order to save his own life and prove his faith to Puritanism, the priest offered to hang the Catholic daughter of the house. It is believed that his offer was accepted and the girl was hanged in front of her parents. Her ghost, often accompanied by strange tappings and bangings, is said to haunt the Scarlet Room.
Other gray ladies are of special interest because of unique characteristics. The white lady of Bolling Hall at Bradford is credited with saving the lives of all the men, women and children of Bradford. The earl of Newcastle had ordered their deaths in retaliation for the killing of the earl of Newport during the English Civil War. The white lady disturbed the sleep of the visiting earl of Newcastle by pulling at the bedclothes three times during the night and pleading with him to take pity on the town.
He rescinded the order the next morning. The gray lady at the famous Levens House in Cumbria, England, was only a passing visitor, never an occupant. The ghost is said to belong to a gypsy who laid a curse that there be no male inheritor of the house until the river Kent stopped flowing and a white fawn was born.
The house’s 17th-century owners reportedly had refused to give the beggar food, and she later died of starvation. The curse was lifted and a male heir was born only when the gypsy’s prophecy came true. Liberty Hall in Frankfort, Kentucky, reportedly is haunted by a benevolent gray lady who does household chores and is seen gazing out a window.
Thank you Robert for these wonderful pictures .
