Saskatchewan Ghost Plane or UFO

“In September 1938  Capt. David Imrie, a Trans-Canada Airline pilot who tragically died in a plane crash near Regina reported seeing what appeared to be “navigation lights of a night-riding ghost plane” as he flew the night mail between Regina and Moose Jaw.

The strange lights were reported several times, but no concrete evidence of a mystery plane was ever produced. There was never any radio contact with the plane, if it was a plane, and no official reasons for the lights has yet been advanced.”

– Jo-Anne Christensen also mentions this event in her book Ghost stories of Saskatchewan.

Casino Regina

“The Beaux-Arts Union Station was constructed in 1911-12. The station was completed the same year the deadly “Regina Cyclone” struck the city, tearing through Wascana Park and gutting part of the downtown area. The building underwent a major expansion in 1931, and the original façade was redone in a simpler Art Deco style with Tyndall stone. As well, terrazzo floors, marble support columns and plaster molded ceilings where added to the interior.”

After being designated a heritage site, the building was converted into Casino Regina, and re-opened to the public on January 26, 1996.

Since the building’s opening as a casino staff members have reported ghostly activity that includes the sighting of at least one apparition, ghostly voices, doors being opened, and closed by themselves, and items that appear to vanish only to turn up in places they were not located before.

Who is haunting Casino Regina? Is the haunting activity related to when the building was a train station?

The Rugeroos

Located near Bienfait and Estevan, Saskatchewan. Here lie many abandoned coal mines and the hills are really neat because they are very old. I was headed down that way for a wedding and I asked directions from the hotel staff and they said “are you going to the voodoo hills?” They said not to talk about it in front of my kids and that was where the Rugeroos live. I said the ruga who? They talked about the hills and how everyone hears voices at night and there are hundreds of year old rocks written on by natives from the past. How there were many murders up there and how there were symbols on the rocks.

When I traveled up there the rocks and hills were beautiful. Its like a little valley in the middle of nowhere. I asked some locals about the story and they told me that at night you can see red eyes in the hills and these were the apparent Rugeroos which were old native American spirits who can transform themselves into animals and mainly coyotes. They are known to be very mean and growl at outsiders and will cause harm. Some people who live right by the rocks and hills say they can hear spirits talking and singing and occasionally see them dancing. The talking is a nightly occurrence.

Fort Battleford

“To walk through Fort Battleford is like stepping back in time. Cannon fire echoes through the fort and costumed staff tell stories of the settlement of the West as they wander through the fort’s original buildings – where the ghost of a surgeon is said to haunt the officers’ quarters.

The fort, built by the North-West Mounted Police at the junction of the Battle and North Saskatchewan rivers, is also the site of the largest mass hanging in Canadian history.

On Nov. 27, 1885, eight aboriginal men who were involved with the North-West Rebellion were tried for murder and hanged within the walls of the stockade. Their gravesite is just metres away, marked by teepee poles in a spot overlooking the river valley.

Odishaw acknowledges the site is not without controversy.

“The issue of creating a tourism site from a mass gravesite is not spiritually correct within the First Nations people, but yet it’s part of our history,” he said.

“None of us can be proud of what happened, but I think we all grow from past experience.”

There have been reports of strange noises, some say war cries, heard in the area – but that may just be par for the course in the Battlefords.”

Even the town hall, which once had an opera house upstairs, has a ghost, according to staff.

They say every once in a while the smell of cookies – chocolate chip cookies, specifically – wafts through the council chambers. Sometimes, there’s the smell of a cigar around desks in the office area.

But no one is baking or smoking.

“It’s Charlie,” a town staffer says with a giggle. “That’s what we call him.”

Estevan Abandoned Mines

There are reports online that the ghosts of First Nation’s people haunt the abandoned coal mines around Estevan along with the spirits of former employees of the mines, and fur traders. We do not have any further details on these specific hauntings, and would like to hear from anyone who has either had a ghostly experience in Estevan, or perhaps can add some further information.

Moose Head Inn Kenosee Lake

The Moose Head Inn at Kenosee Lake is a well known Saskatchewan haunt, located about two hours southeast of Regina. Originally built in the 1960’s by Ethel and Archibald Grandison, the building was used as a dance hall for local teenagers. In 1990 the inn was purchased by Dale Orsted who began to experience ghostly activity soon afterwards. Staff members of the inn report some poltergeist like experiences including doors opening, closing, and even slamming as if by unseen hands, items from the bar area like glasses, and cutlery disappearing only to reappear at a later time, and footsteps being heard when the building is empty. Police have even been called when a loud series of bangs began to be heard, and it was initially thought that someone was attempting a break-in or robbery. The source of the loud bangs were never adequately explained, and the haunting activity increased during renovations. There have been some psychic fairs held at the inn where it was determined that despite the activity calming down over the years the hauntings continued.

Prince Albert Arts Centre

The Prince Albert Arts Centre is a national historic site, and at one time served as the Prince Albert City Hall. Completed in 1893 the building at one time also housed the local library collection. Apparitions have been seen through the windows, as well as mysterious lights when the building has reportedly been empty.

Fort San Fort Qu’Appelle

Fort San near Fort Qu’Appelle is a well known Saskatchewan haunt. It started out as a sanatorium that housed tuberculosis sufferers in a self sufficient setting. In the 1970’s it was converted to house the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts, which sadly closed after 30 years due to a lack of funding.

According to Jo-Anne Christensen author of Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan apparitions of a nurse from its days as a TB sanatorium have been sighted, along with the sounds of creaking wheelchairs. People who have visited this site also reported feelings of being choked and of being out of breath.

At the time this report is being added to this website we have come across some reports stating that Fort San is due to be demolished (2009) but have not been able to verify any demolition date or plan.

Government House Regina

Government House located in Regina is a museum, and heritage site. Its resident ghost has been nicknamed Howie, and is thought to be the spirit of a former cook that had worked there.

Mild poltergeist activity has been attributed to Howie including phantom footsteps, doors opening, and closing without human assistance, and items disappearing, and reappearing again in places where Howie would have wanted them to be.

A male apparition has been seen in mirrors along with people’s own reflections, also a male spirit has been reported to have been sighted in the kitchen area.

However, Howie may not be alone. The sounds of children laughing when there were no children in the house have also been reported. ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

 Bekevar Church

Bekevar Church, a heritage site was built between 1911-12, and is located in Kipling Saskatchewan. One of Canada’s largest Hungarian settlements formed in the Bekevar District of Kipling and the central point of that community was this beautiful church.

The architectural design of Bekevar Church was apparently inspired by the Great Church in Debrecen Hungary which is where yours truly’s (the writer of this entry) family just happen to be from.

The church is rumoured to be haunted by a protective male spirit, and involves the church bell.

1800 College Avenue Regina

Currently (2011) this address is home to The Computer Clinic. It is a heritage building and originally the private residence of a local judge, and his family. Through the years it has served as a headquarters for the women’s suffrage movement, and as coffee house, and it was during this latter phase that rumours of a haunting began.

Staff of Magellan’s Global Coffee House reported experiencing the apparition of a lady in a wedding dress. On one dramatic occasion a staffer reported that the ghost walked right through her. The staffer quit her job on the spot. There were also reports of poltergeist activity, with appliances turning off and on with no human assistance.

The descendants of the two family’s that lived at this address the longest have all stated they had not experienced anything ghostly in this location, and in fact much of the urban legends surrounding the “ghost” have been handily debunked. One explanation was that a former nanny who worked there committed suicide, and this caused the haunting. Upon investigation by the then owner this was proven to have never taken place. Another cause for the ghost was said to be a woman who drowned in the cistern. The property has never had a cistern. And yet another theory on the ghost’s identity involved a fire where someone had died….this too proved to be false.

As for the current owners…they state on their website that “we can neither confirm nor deny the haunting rumours.”;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

The Inge House

The Inge House (as it is known today) was built by Ingimundur Eiriksson (always called Ingi, and signed himself I. E. Inge) an Icelandic settler. It is located near the Foam Lake Marsh viewing tower in an area which is considered to be the first Icelandic settlement in Saskatchewan.

There are rumours that Inge House is haunted possibly by one of the early settler’s children who reportedly died from severe burns. This appears to be just a rumour with no substantiated reports at least none that we could find at this time. It is said the locals and visitors to the area have heard strange sounds emanating from the house, which may or may not have contributed to the belief that it is haunted.

Danbrys Restaurant Regina

Danbry’s Restaurant is located at 1925 Victoria Avenue in Regina, Saskatchewan. The building this fine dining establishment is housed in is a heritage property with a rich history. It was at one time the home of the exclusive Assiniboia Club, a private gentleman’s club were ladies were prohibited from entering.

While ladies may have been prohibited certain members would bring local prostitutes into the private bedroom area for their own entertainments.

Legend states that one of these prostitutes was murdered on the third floor, and her restless spirit still haunts the building.

Employees of Danbry’s have reported electrical disturbances within the building that cannot be readily explained, movements being caught on the security panel in areas that are empty, items such as cutlery disappearing only to reappear where they were not placed before, and a very dramatic event where one employee witnessed vases floating in mid-air!

The Brickleigh Spirit

“Near Rosetown, is the long-haunted community of Brickleigh. In 1938, two terrified sisters back from a moonlit sleigh ride first told of an encounter with a ghostly horse and rider galloping through the night, but silently. Over the years, other residents reported similar sights, along with weird visitations, such as mysteriously opened windows, moved furniture, creaky floors and the like. In 1982 a farmer reached down to pick what he thought was a white rock on his field, only to turn over a human skull. The skull, part of an incomplete skeleton, was identified by RCMP and University of Saskatchewan anthropologists as that of a 25-year-old male, dead some 60 years. Area oldtimers recalled a nasty scrap between two crewmen at the winter camp of the railway construction through Brickleigh in the early 1920s, after which one of the men was never again seen. In the 24 years since the discovery of the skeleton, the once-restless “Brickleigh Spirit” has been quiet.”

The Haunted Sinnet Road

“Sinnet is itself a ghost town, near Lanigan, or is at least unpopulated by the living. The town is no longer on the map, but the six-mile stretch of country road that bears its name has become legendary, wrote Jo-Anne Christensen in her compilation Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan (1995, Hounslow Press). “It seems throughout its history, Sinnet Road has been taking people to destinations truly unknown.”

It is a terrifying trip. In the late 1930s, a local fellow, arriving on foot to a poker game, so shaken he could barely speak, told of an encounter with a figure he thought to be friend. As he approached it, the image exploded skyward into a huge fireball. In the 1970s, a teenager returning home from a high school volleyball practice caught a large hairy creature in the headlights of his car. Many motorists have described pulling over on narrow Sinnet Road for an oncoming automobile, only to have its headlights suddenly vanish.” ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

Tabor Spooklight

“In the late 1930s, a bizarre phantom light hovering at Tabor Cemetery near Esterhazy captivated the entire province, with extensive coverage by newspapers and radio. A floating, glowing orb — and with it a chill to the air — first terrified a woman riding home past the cemetery on horseback after a bridge party, and then, a few years later, frightened a young boy walking to a pal’s place. Soon the cemetery attracted evening crowds — parties, really — emboldened by numbers, and by moonshine, and hoping to catch a glimpse of the notorious light. “The Tabor Light was sometimes described as a ball of fire, slightly reddish or pinkish in color, and occasionally flickering,” wrote Christensen. “Witnesses always said the glow appeared to be directed inward; the light never illuminated the surrounding area … and it would either dance among the trees skirting the cemetery, or speed along the road that ran past it.”

Debate raged throughout Saskatchewan. Phosphorous gases from rotting trees? The souls of the buried? Tabor Cemetery was founded at the turn of the century by a settlement of decidedly atheist pioneers, and a priest later came forward with the story of how in 1905 he prayed for the salvation of a little girl buried there against the wishes of her Christian mother, and how he asked for a sign from God. Was “Old Faithful,” as locals came to call the light, merely an owl or other large bird with luminous wings? The ghost of a local murder victim, by poisoning, in 1908? Heat lightning? A foreshadow of doom, of the worsening Great Depression? Swamp gas?”

To this day, the Tabor Light theories, both scientific and supernatural, compete to be the plausible explanation.

The Regina General Hospital

The Regina General Hospital circa 1925 – City of Regina Archives Photograph Collection

The Regina General Hospital opened as the Victoria Hospital in 1901 with 25 patient beds. It was initially opened with funding from the Victorian Order of Nurses for which it was named. The hospital ran on public donations solely, and eventually had to turn to the city for help as they could not keep up with demand, and were in some desperate cases having to turn patients away. The city took over in 1907, and today over 100 years later it is a major state-of-the-art healthcare centre.

The hospital is rumoured to be haunted by a friendly female spirit who was at one time a nurse during the hospital’s rich past. She is described as elderly in appearance, and will vanish if approached. Perhaps this ghostly nurse is still continuing to care for her patients from beyond?

Bessborough Hotel

The Bess aka The Delta Bessborough hotel is a ten-story hotel located in downtown Saskatoon. The hotel is a historical landmark is known for its castle-like appearance. The hotel was built by the Canadian National Railway from 1928 to 1932 and is designed in the same Château-style as many of Canada’s other railway hotels.

The hotel has a reutation for being haunted by the spirit of a smiling older man, who is dressed in a gray suit and wearing a fedora. He has been seen by staff walking on the banquet floor late at night. He is reported to be harmless, and most do not even realise he is a ghost when first encountering him.

Bartlebys Barts on Broad

Bartleby’s/Bart’s on Broad is located at 1920 Broad Street in Regina. The building is reportedly haunted by a friendly spirit that causes mild poltergeist-like activity such as moving objects from their places to other places.

The ghost is affectionately called “Buddy” and some staffers believe he is the spirit of Kid Letowsky, a man who was killed by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in Butte, Montana. The bar itself is from Butte and the bullet hole that was used to kill Letowsky is still in the bar. The spirit they believe is attached to the actual bar.

Private Home Haunting In Saskatoon

We received the following report of a private home haunting in Saskatoon in May 2010:the witness said the following

“This is not the first time I’ve had an experience like this, but it was by far the most disturbing/active incident.I was home alone one evening watching TV in my living room and heard a loud “click” noise.  I remember thinking it sounded like the light switch in my bedroom and got up to investigate.  My bedroom light/ceiling fan HAD turned on by itself. I shut it off and remember thinking it must have been part way up and just went on.  Didn’t think much more about it until about 30 minutes later when I heard something else. It’s hard to describe but it sounded like a ssshhh  ssshhh. Then a pause before the next ssshhh ssshhh.  My cat at this point was also paying attention and the sound seemed to be getting slightly faster and more frequent.  My cat finally ran out of the room.  I wasn’t particularly bothered by any of this until I felt a very strange feeling.  Every hair on my body started to stand up and I had an incredibly strong sensation that I was not alone in the house. It was about this point that I realized that the sound I was hearing sounded like someone walking on the laminate flooring and kind of dragging each foot as they walked.   Since that incident, I have noticed a few “unusual” things in my house.  Items go missing and turn up in crazy places.  For example, I recently found my remote control in  my freezer, car keys in my kitchen sink, cell phone in a large planter, etc. Also, I work shift work (lots of nights)and recently my downstairs neighbor complained to me that I keep him awake walking around at night…except I’m rarely home at night.”

Regina Sleep Paralysis Or Something More

The witness writes:

“I rented a small house probably built in the 50’s and lived alone there for 6 months in 2006. I was woken up regularly with that “sleep paralysis” thing in the middle of the night and witnessed dark shadows in the doorway of my bedroom. On other occasions at the same time, I would get a tingly sensation of someone laying down behind me in my bed. I sensed that someone was there rather than “just tingling”.

I somehow knew it was a woman. To make it go away I recited an exorcism prayer in my head (I couldn’t speak) I also had a friend sleep over in the living room and they reported the room illuminated at 2-5 am…..with lights off and all blinds closed. They sensed something was there as well. I also heard footsteps upstairs while doing laundry in the basement and ran upstairs to see no one there. I often sensed it in the day when alone, and prayed they would find where they need to be. I also sensed from them they were troubled and something bad happened…but did not try to find out too much. I made them keep their distance..but wished them well.

When I moved to a new place across town, it followed me and woke me up on only two occasions before stopping completely up to this date (2012). It gave me a specific message (in my paralysis state) to keep away from a specific person in my life.—->the strange thing was, the owner of the house I was renting often asked if there was anything wrong with the house in a strange way. And pointed out how the previous tenants left in a hurry (some of their stuff was still there). I brushed a lot of it off as sleep paralysis at the time……but years later (now) I believe it to be real. Nothing with anything near that intensity had happened before or after that house.

I have a feeling it was some family members that had bad experiences in the house at one point. I can’t explain how, but it felt like they were related. There were at least 2 or 3 of them. A man, a woman, and someone younger. I can only speculate there was some kind of molestation or abuse situation that occurred there because of the family connection I felt they had with each other along with the laying down behind me. And of course the feeling that something was wrong…..always wrong. As well as the “male” shadow peering in my bedroom doorway.

The wiring was replaced before I rented it, so I don’t think the emf rating was the cause.”

Strange Encounter North Battleford 1976

The following was shared with us in 2013. The event described was quite odd and life altering for the experient, who asks is this some sort of Angelic intervention or something else?

When I was 21 in 1976 I had a very bizarre experience. I became a teenage mother in 1974 when I was 19 years old. Throughout my childhood I was angry. My mother and I had a very dysfunctional relationship. As a teenager I was , rebellious and constantly getting into trouble, doing drugs, being promiscuous, suffering depression and anxiety. My friends and I play with ouija boards and I was fascinated with the witchcraft and demonology…basically anything to do with the occult. Weird things happened to me and I believe I was “haunted from the age of 16 until 21.

Well I had my son and I believe he saved my life. I don’t know where I would have gone had motherhood not stopped my downward spiral. The strangest thing occurred however several months before my son’s 2nd birthday. Out of the blue a former boyfriend who remained a dear friend began calling me from Calgary. I lived in North Battleford, as did he before moving to “Cow Town”. Well Kevin started to call constantly saying he wanted to be the father of my baby (although he wasn’t) and that I should move up to Calgary so he could look after me and my son. He just would not relent no matter what I said. Slowly I began to think moving to Calgary was a good Idea but told Kevin I would not live with him. I had a girlfriend who lived there and asked if I could stay with her until I found a place of my own. She agreed. So my folks moved me up, I settled in for a couple of days before contacting Kevin. Kevin invited me to his place which was a big old three story house where he had his own room but shared the rest of the house with other renters. This was a common form of living arrangements for  young adults in the 70’s. When I went to his place I was only there for a few minutes when this girl walks into the room. She approached me with a smile. She had this ash blonde hair that was long and rather thin and colourless and slightly greasy. Her face was pasty and a little pudgy in the way of some vegetarians who don’t eat right. I saw a lot of that type during the seventies. She was wearing a black long sleeved gymnastic suit with hipster bell bottom faded jeans which was a common and stylish “hippy uniform” of the decade. I used to where the same kind of thing. You had to pull the entire top down to use the wash-room as it was all one piece! Anyway she was focussed only on me and as she approached she said “Hi Sheri!” I remember thinking Kevin must have been talking to her about me before I arrived. I smiled back and remember Kevin looking from me to her with a funny expression on his face. Anyway, this girl was around 21 to 25 years old and I was halfway past 21 and she says to me, and this is not verbatim but the gist of what she said:

“I was sent here to warn you. What you have been doing has put you in a place between the dark and the light and this has opened you up to danger. I did the same as you and I killed myself. I am here to warn you to stop everything you have been doing involving the occult. Throw away your books, don’t dabble in any of it or the same thing will happen to you.”

Then she turned around and walked away. Immediately I looked at Kevin and asked him who that was and he said he thought I knew her! Evidently she had just moved in that day! Weirder still she never returned and she had paid a month’s rent! After this incident Kevin lost all interest in me  and being a father to my son!!! We returned to being good friends who saw each other on occasion until I moved back to North Battleford about a month later. After that I lost contact with Kevin and have not seen him again although I have tried to find him over the years. I followed that strange girl’s advice. The weird things that had been happening to me pretty much stopped although remnants linger. I try to block anything that makes me uncomfortable and ignore the occult although I do search for stories similar to mine.

Swift Current Haunting Water Poltergeist

We received the following report of a haunting in Swift Current in August 2014, but the events described below occurred in the Autumn of 2006. The report is mostly in the witness’ own words, but has been edited to protect private data including sensitive information related to a tragedy connected to the dwelling.
“Me and my ex girlfriend moved in together to a three story apartment building with five suites. We lived there about two weeks until the first experience.

I was looking for a cup for water and I opened the cupboard and the glasses were all filled with water right to the top in the cupboard. I questioned my ex extensively and she didn’t do it nor was anyone there. Next thing to happen was we both came home from school , and went into the bathroom , and a Christmas wreath that was hidden away in the closet was hanging on the shower head , the cat litter box sitting in the tub , filled a quarter way with water….the doors were locked nobody was there. We both left to tell my mother which lived down the street about it , we were gone a half hour , both walked back in and all my CDs , about 20 were spread all over the floor in a pattern right side up. They were in a CD case originally.

We had a cat , which the entire time would not come out from under the couch. Only to eat which was not its character. We took photos and film, batteries would drain instantly and photos we got of orbs or figures would delete themselves off the camera before we left the property.

Me and another friend did research on the property at the Southwest Booster in Swift Current on microfilm. After hours and hours of searching , I eventually came across an item linking a tragedy to the apartment (please note we have edited the exact nature of the item out of this report to protect privacy). I got this time line from looking in old phone books and calling people asking if they ever heard anything about the place..someone did call me back saying they lived in the apartment before and was told by a neighbour across the street a tragedy had taken places a couple of years before.

When I learned all this it all made sense… We heard walking upstairs, toilets flushing and we were the only people there. We had to leave because we couldn’t handle it anymore. I sense it didn’t want us there, I dreamt of events that are very similar to the tragic history before learning about them. I never believed in spirits until I lived there and want this story passed on.”
