Black Mouthed Old Ladies

The black-mouthed old ladies of Montreal ……. The term “Black Mouthed Old Ladies” is something we coined as it’s an accurate description… You see, we’ve received not one, but two independent reports featuring these creepy apparitions over a year long period.

The stories are both from Montreal, Quebec, and have been confirmed as being from two very separate sources that did not (to the best of our abilities to check) contact each other prior to speaking with us. In fact they were from opposite ends of the city.

Basically, in both cases, the witnesses were male and saw effectively the same thing… although the absolute descriptions varied, one aspect was identical.

Both men saw what, for all intents and purpose was a normal “little old lady” in their home. This was unusual for both men as no “little old ladies” were visiting or expected. The women walked through the room where each man was located quite normally except for one disturbing thing…

Both women are described as having their mouths hanging open… as if they had no muscle control to close them. As opposed to having a tongue or teeth, the mouths are just a vacant, black, dark hole. Hence, “Black Mouthed Old Ladies”.

There is nothing sinister in their actions, the women appear in the room, walk through it oblivious to the witness and then simply vanish.

The first report received was from a young gentleman who while painting an apartment in which an elderly lady passed away shortly before, he describes feeling a presence, (like the feeling you get when someone is standing behind, watching) and when he looked up, saw an old lady whose mouth was open and (gulp) it seemed to him that it was extraordinarily BLACK inside. He describes it as a “black hole”.

The woman walked into a room and simply disappeared. (He didn’t finish the painting job)

We filed away this strange report, and did not publicize it until approx. a year later when we received yet another one …..

The second occurred during daylight hours also …. it was different young man in another house, located across town. In this case he was merely watching television when he turned around from his seat on the couch to see a “black-mouthed old lady” walk by …..needless to say he was quite startled ….. and highly disturbed by her rather unique appearance …….

Over the years we have tried to find similar reports ….. have searched through mountains of text on folklore from various cultures, and have found nothing quite like these gruesome apparitions …….

Have you ever heard of anything similar? Have any theories on why she would appear with a large gaping black hole where her mouth should be?

I’ve got to admit that it is not often I receive a ghost report or read a story that frightens me …. but the thought of bumping into one of these specters is rather chilling! And yeah, even this hardened sceptical gal would want to run!Sleep tight!

Schefferville Le Guest House

Written by Stu Finlay

Le Guest House – Schefferville, Quebec

Schefferville is a small village with a population of around 200 located in Northern Quebec, just 2 km from the Labrador border. Amongst the landmark buildings of the village is Le Guest House. Situated on the shores of Knob Lake, Le Guest House is a hotel many claim to be haunted.
On September 7 1959, then Quebec premier, Maurice Duplessis, died at Le Guest House, where he had been staying on a fishing trip. Since then, he is believed to be haunting the hotel.

Guests have reported the apparition of a man by the foot of their bed, strange sounds and other poltergeist activity.  Does Maurice Duplessis, a controversial figure in life, still haunt the location of his death, some 50 years after the fact?

Kingsmere

Written by Stu Finlay

Kingsmere is the name of a property and village in the Gatineau Hills, located about 25 minutes from downtown Ottawa.

In 1902, former Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King (who did not name the property, it was already known as Kingsmere long before) bought the property.

Over the course of decades, Kingsmere was expanded significantly, with such additions as Kingswood, a four room cabin, five other homes, barns, gardens and even Moorside ruins. King often ran the country from his home in Kingsmere and entertained many guests, suck as the Duke of Windsor and Winston Churchill. King died in 1955, leaving Kingsmere to the government of Canada.

Today, Kingsmere is a popular tourist attraction. It is also said to be haunted by King himself. He has been seen walking the grounds of the property.

It is interesting to note that King had a fascination with the paranormal.

The Shawville Poltergeist

A Disincarnated Being  The Clarendon Spirit Tells Who He Is to a Psychist  Voices from the Other World  A Sworn Report Concerning the Strange Doings at Dagg’s House

Originally published by the Ottawa Free Press, November 25,1889
The enterprise shown by the Free Press in despatching a reporter to personally enquire into the strange proceedings at the house of George Dagg, a farmer residing at Clarendon Front, Pontiac County, has attracted general attention to that spirit-haunted locality, and the result has been a general rush of curiosity seekers to investigate these phenomena. Those who went could make nothing out of the matter and for the most part laughed at the whole affair and attributed the alleged supernatural occurrences to human agency. A correspondent apparently a past master in black art did explain the cause of the persecution of the Dagg family but in too vague a manner to satisfy the general public. It has remained therefore for Mr. Percy Woodcock, an adept in psychological matters, to act as the medium between the spirits, who, he claims, are the cause of all the trouble and an unbelieving public. That gentleman’s adventures are little else than marvellous and the sworn testimony he exhibits seems to prove satisfactorily that there actually exist airy spirits beyond the ken of mortal eye. Mr. Woodcock, who is well known as an artist in Ottawa, Montreal, New York and Paris, spent three days with the Dagg family and certainly did not waste his time. The spirits “cottoned” to him at once, for he had hardly arrived at the house before an invisible inhabitant of the family woodshed addressed the artist as follows: “I am the devil; and I’ll have you in my clutches.” Mr.Woodcock declined to be scared, and therefore the spirit called him opprobrious names.

A conversation then ensued between Mr. Woodcock, the voice and Mr. George Dagg who afterwards jointed them, lasting for five hours without a break. Mr. Woodcock took the position that he had to deal with an invisible personality, as real as though there in the flesh, and on this basis endeavored to shame him into better behavior and stop persecuting the Daggs who had admittedly done him (the voice) no harm. On the other hand the voice resisted for a long time, but finally seemed to yield to the expostulations of Mr. Woodcock and Mr. Dagg and agreed to cease the use of obscene language and finally admitted that it had been actuated solely by the spirit of mischief, of having fun, as it termed it, and had no ill will against anybody except Woodcock and the little girl Dinah, to whom he seemed to have a decided antipathy. Mr. Woodcock’s later experiences are of the same remarkable nature. In order to convince the outside world that there was no humbug in the matter, he drew upon a “report” which seventeen responsible citizens of the neighborhood signed. This document sets forth that the curious proceedings treated of being on the 15th of September and were still in progress on the 17th November. The events chronicled are, briefly, that fires broke out spontaneously in different parts of the house, that stones were thrown by invisible hands through the window; that various household articles were thrown about by invisible agency; that a mouth organ was heard to be played and seen to move across the floor; that a rocking chair began rocking, that when the child Dinah is present (?), a deep gruff voice like that of an aged man had been heard at various times, both in the house and out doors, and when asked questions answered so as to be distinctly heard, showing that he is cognizant of all that has taken place, not only in Mr. Dagg’s family but also in the families in the surrounding neighborhood; that he claims to be a disincarnated being who died twenty years ago, aged eighty years; that he gave his name to Mr. George Dagg and Mr. Willie Dagg, forbidding them to tell him; that this intelligence is able to make himself visible to Dinah, little Mary and Johnnie, who have seen him under different forms at different times, at one time as a tall, thin man with a cow’s head, horns, tail, and cloven foot, at another time a big, black dog, and finally as a man with a beautiful face and long white hair, dressed in white, wearing a crown with stars on it.

The above document is signed by the following: John Dagg, Portage du Fort, Que.; George Dagg, Portage du Fort, Que.; William Eddes, Radsford, Que.; William H. Dagg, Arthur Smart, Charles A. Dagg, Bruno Morrow, Portage du Fort; Benjamin Smart, William J. Dagg, Shawville, Que.; Robert J. Peever, Cobden, Ont.; R.H. Lockhart, John Fulford, Portage du Fort; George G. Hodgins, Richard E. Dagg, Shawville; George Blackwell, Haley’s, Ont.; William Smart, John J. Dagg, Portage du Fort.

After Mr. Woodcock left on Sunday night the following extraordinary manifestation is said to have been given. The voice requested that some persons whom it named should be sent for. As these gentlemen were far away Rev. Mr. Bell, a Baptist clergyman, was persuaded to come. Mr. Bell read a chapter from the Bible, the voice accompanying him through it and occasionally going in advance of the clergyman. When they knelt to pray the voice responded. Mr. Bell prayed for the family whom he said had brought the trouble upon themselves by trampling the Bible underfoot, or words to that effect, and finally exorcised the spirit, commanding him in the name of the Saviour to depart, whereupon the spirit laughed and said it was all words, that Mr. Bell had better stick to photography. Mr. Bell left without directly speaking to the voice at any time.
Afterwards the voice sang a hymn in so beautiful a manner as to cause the women present to shed tears. On Monday morning Mr. Woodcock went over to the house again and whilst there the three children came rushing out of the house wild-eyed and fearfully excited, saying that they had seen a beautiful man dressed in white with gold things on his head and stars in it, and that the man spoke to them. The child Dinah said she heard the man say that Woodcock had said that he was not an angel, but that he would show that he was.Thereupon the apparition went up in the air in a blaze of fire and disappeared. This final transformation scene is supposed by Mr. Woodcock to be the last of the mysterious events at the Dagg mansion. It seems a pity that Mr. Woodcock’s visit and the ghastly pranks should cease at the same time.;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

 Sugar Shack Ghost

Written by Stu Finlay

Sugar shack ghost – Paranormal phenomena or urban legend?
Zion County is located in the Pontiac region of Quebec, nestled between the Ottawa river to the west, and Shawville to the east. The area consists mostly of forests and farmland. Like many such regions of Quebec, there is a local sugar shack, where maple syrup is prepared during early spring. Unlike most other sugar shacks across the province, this one is allegedly haunted. Or is it?
The origins of the stories are difficult to track down, yet they are well known to many in the area.

Located in a thick patch of forest, the sugar shack is a popular “makeout” place, due to it’s relative seclusion, especially at night, when the road it’s situated on is hardly used.

As the story goes, when parked there for a little while, someone or something will start knocking on the car window. At this point, people are generally frightened enough to drive away quickly. There hasn’t been any stories of people sticking around to see what, if anything, would happen next.

It must be noted that this type of story is hardly unique: many places across North America with similar “creepiness” have nearly identical stories. Is this a case of an urban legend adopted or influenced by other, similar urban legends, or is there legitimate paranormal activity taking place here? Or could it be something else, perhaps a practical joke? These questions remain unanswered.

Montreal Lost Soul Or Guardian Angel

“In October of 2007, I was hospitalized for an infectious disease. I was very close to death and when I came out of the hospital in November of 2007, I went home. A few days later I was sleeping in my bed and saw this white figure (very tall, slim) and it walked right into my parent’s room and it turned its head to look in my direction. Being paralyzed by fear, i was in no state to move, talk, or scream. And so, the apparition walked out of my parent’s room and walked into my room and walked around my bed to see my face. It was a tall, really pale, slim, mid 30’s bald guy. It looked at me as though it was searching for someone, thinking I might be the one he’s looking for. After a minute or so of observing me, it walked out by my window and disappeared. I’ve seen him/ felt his presence only once or twice a year afterwards until the past two weeks or so, its been more frequent. I have asked my mother what it could possibly be, she said it was most likely a lost soul searching his family or what not or maybe my guardian angel. To be honest, at the point I’m at, i really don’t know what to think. I live in a house built in the 70’s and it doesn’t have the typical aspect of a haunted house which brings me to think that the one haunted, is me.”

The Lady In White of Montmorency Falls

The “Lady in White” is associated with the Montmorency Falls. Her legend involves a love story between herself, and a young soldier. The Lady in White and the soldier were engaged, and during the midst of their wedding preperations he was called away to battle.  The Lady was quite worried and feared that her fiancée would be killed during the summer military campaign.

During a battle at Montmorency Falls in 1759 the young soldier lost his life. The Lady was suffering tremendous grief at her loss, and as the story goes went out each night calling the young soldier’s name in a vain hope that he may somehow return to her.

The following year the Lady put on her wedding dress and threw herself into the Montmorency Falls. Her body was never recovered.

To this day there are some people who claim they have seen the Lady in White through the mists of the Montmorency Falls.

The Plains of Abraham

A view of the Plains of Abraham during the summer months.

The Plains of Abraham is a historic area within The Battlefields Park in Quebec City. The area was originally grazing land, but became famous as the site of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, which took place on 13 September 1759.

During the summer months there have been reports of a ghostly soldier, but it is speculated that many ghosts may inhabit this location because of the loss of life that occurred there. People have reported strange sounds, the smell of canon smoke, and uncomfortable feelings while visiting the park.

Brador Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Brador Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary is made up of both Greenly Island and Perroquet Island near Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon Quebec. This remote area (located some 1,600 kms northeast of Montreal) is home to many seabirds, and is an important conservation site. L’Anse aux Dunes Beach is a large sandy beach from which visitors can see the sanctuary. This beach is said to be haunted by the spirit of someone who was lost at sea. With the area’s rich history, and prehistory we would not be surprised at all if there were many other ghost stories waiting to be told…and of course we would love to hear about them.  ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

 Private Residence Hull

When I was a child my family and I moved into a house in Hull, Quebec, which I believe was, and is still, haunted. I don’t know if this is relevant or not, but the family that lived there before us had left quite unexpectedly. We don’t know why exactly but we do know that the grandfather of the family had died, quite peacefully in his sleep, in one of the back rooms. We lived there for approximately 8 years. The entire family (mom, dad, two sisters, a brother, a grandmother and myself) at one time or another has witnessed either apparitions, loud noises in the night, the sound of a baby crying, odd objects appearing then disappearing, and/or knocking at doors, etc.

Since moving out at age 19, I have had continuous dreams about the house. Sometimes they are very troubling, sometimes bizarre, sometimes abstract, sometimes very plain. I used to dream about the house several times a week but this has decreased over the last couple of years to maybe one dream every 3 to 4 months. It was very disturbing to me at first so I had not mentioned it to anyone except my husband. However, since the frequency had diminished, I felt better about it and mentioned it to my mother a few months ago. As a response she let out a loud ghasp. She then told me about my younger sister who also dreams continuously about the house. She also went on about my brother who apparently was always talking about the house until he felt compelled to stop one day when he saw a “FOR SALE” sign outside the house. He explained to the real estate agent that he had lived in the house and simply needed to see it again.

I have since talked with my sister and have compared dreams and impressions about the house. We both agree that there is something that is attracting us to the house and we would like to know what that is exactly. We have so far found out who the current owner is and will probably attempt to contact him to see if he will agree to a visit. He might think we’re a couple of crazy ladies but we’ll attempt it anyways.

A Childhood Haunting In Montreal

“I’m pretty sure that as a child I was haunted. Maybe it’s because I was young and innocent, but I have had a couple of experiences. One of them, the one that was most obvious and that other people witnessed, was in a new house my parents had just bought. I was about 7 or 8 years old when this happened. My room was on the second floor, a nice big room with my bed and a very big dresser made of very thick wood, the ones that stand tall, and a smaller one with a mirror. My grand-mother who was about 58 at the time was my babysitter. Anyway, the layout of the room was like this, my bed was against the wall but in the middle of the wall, the big dresser was in a corner and I don’t remember where the other one was. I got home from school one day and went to my room, my grand-mother was down stairs fixing lunch or supper. When I got to my room I noticed that my big dresser was pushed right against my bed which was about 4 feet from my bed. No scratches on the hard wood floor. My grand-mother alone could not move the dresser across the hard wood floor without scratching it, it was too big and heavy. My father said that it took two people to lift the dresser and move it. He called the contractor of the new house and asked him if a dresser that size could move on it’s own because of the settling of the house, the contractor said absolutely not. Sorry if I’m making mistakes, I’m used to writing in French. This happened more than once, always without scratching the hard wood floor.

In the same house, I was in bed for the night and I could hear someone in the kitchen getting a glass of water and reading the newspaper…turning the pages of the newspaper. I go downstairs because I wanted a glass of water too. When I got to the kitchen, only the light above the stove was on. No one was in the kitchen, but the glass was on the counter next to the sink and the newspaper was neatly folded on the table. I got scared and ran down to the basement where my parents were, they were watching tv. I asked them who was upstairs just minutes ago and they said no one. I got chills up my spine, I still do today when I think of it! I was told that the houses in the neighbourhood were built over where an old cemetery once was, I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it’s what the contractor had told my father.”

The Queen Elizabeth Hotel

The Queen Elizabeth, known in French as Le Reine Élizabeth Hotel, is a very large, and  beautiful hotel that is located at 900 René Lévesque Boulevard West, Montreal. This Canadian National Railway hotel was completed in 1958, and now belongs to the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts chain. It currently holds the record for being the largest hotel in the province, and is quite famous.

We received the following report of strange happenings from a guest, who questions whether or not the hotel may have an active haunting. By tradition it is rumoured to be haunted by a female spirit in a white dress.

“I experienced spirit phenomenon in my hotel room this morning …. No i didn’t see it but it definitely got my attention. No I didn’t feel threatened but…I believe that it was active in the room for about one hour starting at about 6 am.  Sounds were being made all over the room of which I was trying to logically determine were from elsewhere… the room next door, the hallway, etc.  Although I tried I could not convince myself that the sounds were coming from anywhere but in my room.

The sounds were:

*a person pacing walking close to the bed and around the room

*sounds of things moving

*in the bathroom & in the main part of the room  ( no, I didn’t hear the
  water turn on…)

*almost like the sounds someone would make if they got up and were
  getting ready for the day

*the sounds were loud enough to keep waking me up and eventually I was
very aware but not sure that I wanted to stop the phenomenon.

Then it woke me up with a physical push (jolt) to the mattress ( in which I was still lazing about…in and out of sleep.. but definitely not at that point).  Message clearly received – Get the hell out of bed !  It’s time to get up!   No, I didn’t hear a voice accompany the shove.

So I acknowledged the presence and said I was definitely awake for the day and that he could now leave. I would like to find out if others have also had the same experience at the Queen Elizabeth hotel?”

Shadows And Disembodied Footseps In Pierrefonds

The following was sent in by one of our readers:

“Like some of the entries, i am a first time reader of this page. I like the  idea that people with paranormal sightings have the opportunity to mingle  with those that have had similar experiences. Well, my story takes place in  Pierrefonds, Montreal. I was about 10 at the time, and would have a tough  time going to sleep. The reason was that i would constantly hear footsteps at  night. When everyone would be asleep, i would here footsteps walk down  through the hall and enter my room. The steps were not hurried, but casual.  What was eerie was the sound they made on the wooden floor. But i can still  here those footsteps vividly in my memory as the walked down the hall and close to my bed. That is when they would disappear.

I complained long and hard to my parents, but they just blamed it on the old house setteling. But just recently I brought the topic up again, and my dad  said I was correct in mentioning the footsteps constantly. He even said I complained about seeing shadows in the room, but I can’t recall that. BUt  when I look back at this event, my perception gives me the feeling that it was an older gentleman just lost between this life and the after life.
Interestingly, in the same house, one night we heard a horrible shriek come out of the basement. I had my uncles over, so some of them ran to the  basement, and others went outside. Not a person was in sight. The shriek was horrible, but it sounded as though somebody was throwing up as well. It could have been a joke, but we saw no presence of human activity near by.”

St-Alphonse-De-Rodriguez Haunting

The witness writes:

“I have heard sounds from another dimension, the sound of breaking crockery in the cupboards. In winter, with no air flow in the house, a door has triggered and shut by itself by turning the handle. I saw a shadow walk on walls when I was sleeping in the basement, but nobody had been walking outside that could explain the figure who walked on the walls. I know this because I live in the countryside. The most frightening thing was this morning when I woke up in front of a dark figure standing before me, but this figure had formed of matter and I could distinguish a human form beside my bed. I started screaming and then I closed my eyes, and when I opened them it (the human form) was gone. My mother has even heard the sound of a crying baby, but I’ve never heard that. This is obviously a paranormal phenomenon from another dimension to ours. The explanation for ghost this is logical because of his human being who was present and their behavior reflects well. We just call them specter or ghost, or shade or demon. But no matter because it does not belong to our world.”

Apparitions In Gaspe

We received the following report of apparitions from the Gaspe area of Quebec in 2010, however the events being described happened more than a decade ago.

“I was 4 years old and I remember it as if it were just yesterday. I was living with my parents in a townhouse and even at that age Ii felt the creeps while there. I was in my room one day alone when I saw my grandmother sitting on the bed. I sat in front of her on a little chair and talked with her. She touched my hand, and to me everything seemed normal.

My father arrived from work for dinner and my sister was watching me so my father asked her where I was and she told him shes talking to someone or herself in her room. My father opened my door and asked me who I was talking to and I told him “Granny” he said” it cant be granny because shes been dead now for 6 months”  I didn’t know that. He got freaked out and brought me downstairs, and I never saw her again. Since that happened I’ve had several experiences I could never explain happen to me.

Once again I was very young around the same age as my other experience… My mother had left me alone outside while she had business in a big building and next to it was a very creepy abandoned house. There was a trail leading beside the house which led to the townhouse we lived in. I decided to go around the house and go home and my mother came out and found me and we went home together, but when I looked back at the creepy house I saw a figure of a person all lit up in white a flashing white and it was peeking behind the tree. I told my mother and she told me it was my imagination. Later when I was older it was about 6 pm when I looked outside behind the house and saw that very same thing, a human form lit up in white flashing zoom right past my house.  Once again I told my Mom about it, but she didn’t react.

Years went on and I never saw it  again until I was 13 and I was listening to music in my room and doing home work and it was dark out . I always leave the blinds open and there again I saw it walk past my window. I didn’t know what to do so i told myself it was my imagination. I am now an adult and I saw this very same figure where I live now passing by my back door and disappearing into nowhere…. 4 times in my life I have seen this..I would like to know what it is and why I saw it so many times.”

One of our readers kindly shared some past experiences from the Gaspe Pennisula area:

“In my family, everybody believes in ghosts, maybe it’s because we are 90% native Indian blooded. (montagnais, north east coast of Quebec; around Baie Comeau right across from the gaspesian peninsula)

Anyways, when my maternal grandma was alive, she kept saying that her second husband kept pulling her toes to wake her up in the morning, she told my mom he kept doing it even after his death.

My dad went to the washroom in the middle of the night and he saw my grandma standing in front of him when all of a sudden my grandma said: Don’t worry,” (name deleted for privacy) like she was talking to my mom, “I just wanted to say goodbye”. My mom at the same time was asleep in her bedroom, she woke up screaming on top of her lungs:  “Mom!!!” Maybe 10 minutes later the phone rang, and it was my uncle he just said: she’s gone…(meaning our grandma)

My dad is renown in the family to see ghosts; dead or alive. Maybe 10 years ago, I called my dad’s house and he said “Hi (name deleted for privacy), how’s everything?” My parents didn’t have a caller I.D. so I guess you can imagine my surprise, I just said: What the f. dad, how did you know it was me?

He just said very casual about it, “Oh! I just saw you standing over there, behind our rocking chair so when the phone rang I guessed it was you calling and stop swearing or else I’ll tell your mom to wash your mouth with a bar of soap!” At the time I was living far away and he knew I was not physically there. He saw my living “ghost!”

 Chateauguay Energy Entity

We received the following account of a strange, energy entity in May 2010. The actual event occurred in June 2009.

“The story I am about to share with you is true. I have decided to share my experience in hopes that someone, somewhere can relate. I have always been an open minded person however quite skeptical of the paranormal. What I experienced shook my reality to the core.June 4, 2009 approx. 8pmMy boyfriend and I were getting ready to go out for the evening. We had planned to go visit some friends. We were both in the bathroom, he was doing his hair and I was touching up on my makeup. I decided to go play some music. I usually just play music from the computer, which is located in my office. The office door was maybe a quarter of the way open and I didn’t bother looking in before walking in (I never do) As soon as I pushed open the door I almost walked right into this “thing”. I gasped and took a few steps back. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was unlike anything I have ever seen in my life. It had me in complete shock, amazement, terror and confusion. As soon as I gasped my boyfriend asked me what was wrong. I just glared at him for a moment, looked back into the office and walked toward the bathroom. I immediately told him “I just saw something”. He seemed a tad frustrated with me and I realized that I didn’t want to scare him so I just said “nothing, never mind I’m seeing things” But I knew.A good minute went by and he finished his hair, looked at me a little strangely and went to go into the office himself. He immediately started freaking out. He turned to look at me, looked back at “it” and took off into the kitchen. I followed him there. He was in a complete panic. He was shaking, had tears streaming down his face (we are talking about a 25 year old manly man) He kept asking me why it was hiding behind the door and I couldn’t answer. I immediately asked him to explain to me what he saw. Remember I never once explained to him what I had seen. He went on to describe the exact same thing I had just witnessed. It was approximately 6 ft tall, about the same height as my boyfriend but taller than me. It was constantly moving but it stayed in the same spot. It looked almost like oil and water, but smoky. It seemed to take on the colors of what was behind it so it was almost translucent. Whatever it was it seemed to be full of energy. There were like strands of energy going in and out of it. Almost like a sparkler but not as intense in color. Upon seeing it my feeling was that it didn’t want to be seen. I understand that this may not make sense to anyone but it’s what I felt from it. I also want to mention that I think I heard it. When I almost walked into it, it sounded almost like a light buzzing or hissing. The only difference between what I experienced to what my boyfriend experienced is that it was hard for my boyfriend to look directly at it. Almost like looking into a bright light, only it wasn’t bright. Also he felt nauseous, but that could also be nerves. In all I took it better than he did.”

J Henry Birks House

The J. Henry Birks house on Pine avenue in Montreal was built in the late 19th or early 20th century. It was once owned by Henry Birks (1840 – 1928), founder of Henry Birks and Sons, a jewelery store chain, which is why it is named as such.

In modern times, the house is used by doctors and other staff of the Montreal General Hospital, which the house is located right beside. It is with this staff that reports of ghostly activity have come forth.

Many of the cleaning staff have encountered the apparition of a young woman. When she is not seen, the sounds of a female sobbing are often heard, yet when searching for a source of the sound, no one is found. It is currently unknown who the woman could have been.

Other reported phenomena include a TV turning on and off, lights being shut and the sound of footsteps when the house is otherwise empty (as it usually is during cleaning shifts).

While it is currently unknown how staff such as nurses and doctors feel towards the phenomena, it is clear that the cleaning staff are quite frightened, some even refusing to enter the house alone.

Cold Watery Poltergeist

We received the following account of what may be a poltergeist from one of our readers in Richmond Quebec:

“A friend and her husband were visiting me and were staying overnight before going to a club meeting early the next day.  Sometime between 2:30 and 3:00 am, I was awakened by my friend who was standing in my doorway asking if I was awake.  When I replied “I am now” she proceeded to tell me that she had been awakened by someone or something lifting her to a sitting position in her bed by her shoulder and then had her sweater thrown in her face.  She was then told “go and get Pat but don’t cross the water line”.  When I eventually gathered my wits about me, I realized that there were damp spots on my bed and there was a trail of water from the doorway across the floor to the end of my bed.  The strange thing is that my dog sleeps on my bed with me and he never awoke or moved until I actually sat up in bed.  He’s very sensitive to noise in the old house and had my friend attempted to enter my room, he would have instantly jumped up to approach her. After cleaning up the water, we went downstairs for a cup of tea to calm down (my friend, not me – I like my ghostly housemate) whereupon my ghost kept popping in and out (by the sink none-the-less) and when we decided to go back to bed an hour later, I fell back asleep without any problem while my friend continued to have some.  Her bed felt like it had been filled with ice cubes (cold and damp) while her husband’s (who never awoke at all) was warm and dry.”

Little Ghost Girl Montreal

One of our readers writes:

“We moved into the apartment building in Montreal when I was 3 yrs old. Since then, I would never be alone in my room because I felt like I was being watched at night. We moved out and moved back in again when I was 13. The experiences seemed to intensify at that time. I could hear a little girl’s voice calling my name, I could even see her though she was blurry. I could also sense another presence that would come inside my room from time to time while the little girl would only look into my room but not come in.

One night, the corner of my bed closest to my feet sank in as if somebody was sitting down, but there was no one but me in my room.

My mother has seen her and heard her call out for “mom”. My mother thought it was one of us (we are 3 sisters) but we were all asleep in our rooms. She’s heard walking in her room as well. My youngest sister had an ice pack on her mouth and she had taken it off because it was getting too cold. When she went to place it back, it was as if somebody was pulling in the opposite direction. She was alone with my mother in the house.

When I left to move in with my boyfriend into the apartment we are in now, my mother noted that the little girl seemed to be looking for me. She’d see her walk back and forth in front of my old bedroom door.

We don’t know who this little girl is. But before the apartment building was built, the land was a farmhouse land. At the corner of the street there was the farm house and the whole “block” used to be the farm land.”

Ramada Plaza Manoir du Casino

Written by Stu Finlay

Ramada Plaza Manoir du Casino is one of numerous hotels located near The Casino du Lac-Leamy in the Hull sector of Gatineau, Quebec. It is a relatively recent building, with, to our knowledge, no prior reports of alleged paranormal phenomena.

The witness writes:

“This happened to me two years in row. I demanded to switch rooms in the third year. I was accompanying an overnight school trip three years ago to Ottawa and Montreal. Our first night was spent at the Ramada Plaza Manoir du Casino in Quebec. We took up most of the second floor because of our large number. I had a room to myself near one end of the long hallway. I felt strange within minutes of being in the room. Perhaps it was the angle of the drywall that covered up some pipe, or the view through the small window. The curtains concealed a raised window that was narrow. I almost had to tiptoe to see that, flushed with the bottom of this window, was a rooftop with legs of moose sculptures. It was strange. I was woken up in the middle of the night by footsteps in the room above me running back and forth. I couldn’t sleep much. I didn’t think much about it in the first year. Then in the next year, I happened to be in the same room. I think teachers were placed strategically at ends and middle of the hallway. The lights turned off after I left the room to supervise the halls, but the room was not equipped with any timer or sensor. I thought it was strange after I went back into my room and realized I had left with lights and the TV on still. Then at about 1:30AM, I was woken up again by the same kind of footsteps on the top of the ceiling running back and forth. It sounded like two different shoes were on the same person. I could even feel the vibrations at times. I tried to imagine what could be happening upstairs. Then I thought no way, the floors should be sound proof! There was no way footsteps upstairs should be that loud! I knew it was about 1:30AM because when I began to realize this could be something other-worldly, I gathered enough courage to reach for my cellphone to record the sound (my phone had a one-button record feature). As soon as I thought about reaching for my phone, the footsteps stopped dead above me.Then in the following year when I was on this trip again and had the same room, I refused to go in. I switched rooms with four students who reported nothing the next morning, and I had a good night sleep.”

Update: in early January 2015, we received the following from another witness:

“A few years ago my husband and I stayed at this hotel for an anniversary weekend in Hull. I can’t remember what floor we were on but the room we were in had a queen size bed, a sofa and a whirlpool tub. On our first night there we left our luggage by the bed and went down to the hotel’s restaurant. It being July we had left the air conditioner on and had inadvertently placed our luggage directly underneath it. For some reason the air conditioning unit was against the bathroom wall and not near the window where you would normally find them. When we returned our luggage was soaked from what we thought was water dripping from the air conditioner. We complained and a maintenance person was sent up but could find nothing wrong with the air conditioner. We brushed it off as just a coincidence and went to bed. Much later on I was woken up by something. I got a distinct feeling that there was a large heavyset gentleman sitting on a chair nude and staring out the window. We turned on the lights in a panic but there was no one there. I couldn’t get back to sleep. The next night my husband and I came back to the room early and exhausted. We decided to order food and watch a pay-per-view movie. We couldn’t get the television to work. We called the main desk and they sent the same maintenance man. He also couldn’t get the TV to work and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t working. He was very apologetic and commented that he was often called to that room to chase mystery problems. We ate our food and went to bed. Again in the middle the night I was woken up with the feeling that there was someone in the room. The feeling was so strong that I could practically draw the man that I felt was sitting in that chair. He was white, middle-aged, heavyset and balding. He didn’t move, he just sat looking out the window.”

The Château Ramezay

The Château Ramezay is a museum and historic building on Notre-Dame Street in Old Montreal, opposite Montreal City Hall.

“My family and I went to the Chateau Ramesay in old Montreal. My 17 year old daughter and I were entering the ballroom when I heard a noise that sounded like someone’s heels tapping on the wooden floor and a then a light thump of a door closing. My daughter heard these same sounds. However I saw from the corner of my eye a woman in period clothing going out of the ballroom from a door further in the room. There were a few other people in the building including guides in costumes so I didn’t think anything of it until I entered the ballroom fully and realised that there was no other door where I had seen the woman exit and there was no one in the room ahead of us. I have no idea who she could have been because Chateau Ramesay has been rebuilt and redesigned many times. In fact from what I’ve learnt the panelling in the ballroom was imported from a castle in France to the French pavilion of Expo 67 and then donated to Chateau Ramesay. I’m not even sure that the original building had a ballroom.”

Haunting Central Station Montreal

Written by Stu Finlay

Completed in 1943, Central Station is Montreal’s main train hub. The following was sent to us by a witness:
There is this little boy in the Gare Centrale of Montreal, the train station, who I have seen on several occasions. I work in a restaurant in the complex. When I see him, he’s waiting in line, or sitting in the store, but usually just disappears after a certain time.

My dad told me that when he was a kid the was a train incident in the Mont-Royal tunnel. I’ve never been able to prove it, but my dad remembers smoke was said to have come out at both ends and a serious fire down there.Research into a possible train accident in Mount-Royal tunnel has yielded no information at this time.

 Haunting on Colonial

“I was glad to see that other speak up about haunting!!

I was very young about 2 years old, my brother was 4 and my sister was 7, we lived in a building on Colonial between Prince Arthur and Roy the building is no longer there it was torn down a few years after we moved out and turned into a parking lot.
I still remember it as if it was yesterday!!! We all slept in the same bed, a bed that was there when we moved in the apartment as my mother and siblings had just moved to Montreal from Europe to join my dad that was already here.
In that bedroom was a double bed, a dresser and night tables, the walls were covered with news papers, old news papers and poof a man appears, small about our height dressed in a tuxedo, he would try to talk to us but we were scared and we would start to cry and scream, by mother would come in the room, open the light and the man would dis-appear, this went on for a while.
I remember one day very early we were all playing like the game tag and the little man was playing with us as well he was running after us and laughing, my sister and brother jumped on the bed, I tried to jump but I was smaller so the man grabbed my leg and would let go, it was a horrible feeling, he finally let go so after all that screaming my mom had tied a rope to the light switch from our bed so that we could open the light when we were scared. I remember another time when a women appeared with him she was dressed in a gold sequence dress, she had her hair all up in a bun with a crown on her hair and a lot of jewellery then we moved!   The building was torn down a few years later to make a parking lot. Hauntings didn’t stop there for me, I had a few others during my life the last one was December 2006 and I am 52 years old now.”

 Le Château Montebello

Written by Stu Finlay

Le Château Montebello is a large resort hotel situated in the town of Montebello, about half way between Montreal and Gatineau, on the Ottawa River. Now owned by Fairmont, the hotel was originally conceived as a Swiss Alp-styled château resort. Built in 1931, the building was remarkably completed in only four months.

While there have been rumours that the hotel was possibly haunted, the following report sent to us from a witness is the first we have received:
“I stayed at the Fairmont Resort in Montebello Quebec. As I was preparing to go to sleep, felt very strong shiver(resulting in goosebumps), and a presence in the room. I heard a loud noise in the room, which could not be explained. Shortly after, I saw some light? movement near the ceiling in a corner of the room. It seemed to appear, disappear, and reappear a few times over the course of a minute or so. It appeared again, and it took form of a featureless face, child-like, and I felt it watching me. It lasted less than two seconds. The room was cold despite the heater being on a high setting. I stood up, and yelled at it to go away, and turned on all of the lights. The following day I transferred to a different room. On the second night, I was quite unsettled, as I prepared to sleep. With my head on the pillow, and again with the strong feeling of a presence there, I heard a soft almost curious like “hello” from the bed. That was it. I have since checked out of the hotel. I have never experienced anything like this before in my life. Life changing experience. Disturbing.”

Maison Des Bâtisseurs Alma

Is There A Haunting in the House of the Builders?

Alma is a town with a population of over 30 000 situated on the eastern shore of Lac Saint-Jean.

The witness writes:

“In the summer of 2007, I worked at a local museum called House of the Builders in Alma, Qc. I was working as a guide for the summer. One day, I was reading a book to improve my guided tours. I was standing in a door frame when I started hearing footsteps coming from the other end of the basement. I was alone in the basement at the time. The sound was steady, going like : clac, clac clac, clac, clac, steps after steps. Suddenly, I could hear the sound of footsteps turning the corner of the hallway I was standing in. The sound was coming toward me. I say the sound because I was hearing it but I saw no one. Something invisible was walking toward me. After a few seconds, I felt something, like a presence standing in front of me in the door frame. The presence was small, like a child standing in front of me. My instinct took over and I bolted to the other end of the hallway and I turned around to see if someone was following me, still nothing to see. I ran up the stairs back to the ground floor. There were no customers in the house. Even the receptionist was away from her desk. The building was built in 1936, as the town hall of a company town. In the 1960s, it was a police precinct for the Sûreté du Québec. It was the only weird thing that happened to me that summer”
