ghost hunting, residual haunting

Stone Tape Theory Merge

It has been proposed that this page and Stone Tape (a rather neglected page) be merged. Stone Tape Theory isn’t restricted to believe in the grey and spooky, though. It also comes down to the biology of the brain, geography and maybe even electromagnetism. It is a theory of its own. The theory of gravity is said to prove that all things must fall back to Earth, but it’s not a theory about things falling.

Change to Page. Any thoughts?

In the terminology of  ghost hunting, residual haunting, also known as restligeists (German loan word from restlichmeaning “residual” and geist meaning “ghost”), are repeated playbacks of auditory, visual, olfactory, and other sensory phenomena that are attributed to a traumatic event, life-altering event, or a routine event of a person or place, like an echoor a replay of a videotape of past events. Residual Haunting Is one of three different types of haunting. The other two are intelligent and demonic (inhuman haunting). During residual haunting, many victims have stated they’ve seen a ghost but research shows that there is no ghost present. Residual Haunting is an event stuck in an eternity which gets repeated at times. It’s quite possible during a residual haunting to hear footsteps, windows opening and closing. Witnesses of residual haunting also state that they’ve seen people, animals, and other things that interact with the surroundings. There’s no attempted interaction between the living and dead in this case of haunting. There’s no way to stop residual haunting but with time the haunting will fade. These haunting are completely harmless to the living but can be very horrifying. Ghost hunters and related  paranormal television  programs say that a residual haunting, unlike an  intelligent haunting , does not directly involve a spiritual entity aware of the living world and interacting with or responding to it.[1]

One of the first to promulgate the hypothesis of the residual haunting was Thomas Charles Lethbridge  in books such as Ghost and Ghoul, written in 1961.[2] Ghost and Goul Lethbridge, Thomas Charles was a British explorer, archaeologist and parapsychologist. He held professionalism in all fields he studied. In the ghost and Goul, Lethbridge talks about a different haunting that he’s personally experienced. He talks about whether a ghoul has ever been seen and excavations that he’s done. The subject was explored in Peter Sasdy‘s 1972 television play The Stone Tape , written by Nigel Kneale . The explanation offered in the play is that light waves are recorded in the walls of a building when they interact with brain waves associated with fear, and the recorded images are reproduced when triggered by brain waves from a fearful observer. The popularity of the programme has led to residual haunting becoming known colloquially as the “Stone Tape theory.”

 Example

A family living in a town just outside of Philadelphia had some family issues. The father was abusive and had a drinking problem. After coming home and having a few drinks he started getting abusive to his wife and also with his children. One evening the when he got home from work and began drinking. After years of this, the wife finally got fed up with it so one night she confronted with a knife. In the living room, they had a big argument and the wife went to stab the man but he somehow gets a hold of the knife and vigorously stabs her and she dies. Now 50 years later a new family got settled into this new house. One night they are sitting around the living room when they suddenly see a replay of the stabbing take place. They are very frightened and don’t know what’s going on. This happens on a regular basis about two times a month and the families attitudes on life start to go down.

Place Memory & Residual Haunting

December 12, 2015, by  Bryan Williams

Many of the apparitions (or ghosts) that people have reportedly seen nowadays at reputedly haunted locations hardly seem to resemble the classic stereotypical image of a full-bodied, animated spectral figure of a deceased person. Instead, they seem to take rather ambiguous forms, appearing as shadowy outlines, floating lights (“orbs”), or misty, indistinct blobs. It remains a possibility that these supposed “ghosts” may have a purely physical explanation, and do not really represent the spirits of the dead.

However, there have been a fair number of haunting cases reported throughout the history of psychical research in which witnesses have encountered an apparition of a deceased person that seems to be in line with the classical image of a ghost. And in some of these cases, the apparition was said to have been seen in the same surroundings, displaying the same action(s) time and time again, as though it represented a lingering “trace” or remnant of the deceased person’s presence. The term residual haunting has often been used within the paranormal community to refer to this kind of experience.

How might we come to understand the phenomenon of residual haunting? This question has been pondered by psychical researchers ever since the early days, and one possibility they considered is that this type of haunting experience might represent a kind of location-specific “place memory.” What is the basis for this concept, and how might it help us understand the experience of residual haunting? An article which begins to address these questions can be found at this link. (NOTE: the article is in Adobe PDF format)

What is a Residual Haunting?
by Dave Juliano

Do you see the same apparition doing the same things all the time?  Do you hear the same noises, possibly at the same time of day, each time they are heard?  Does that ghost seem to not even realize that you are there?  If the answer is yes to any of these, you may be witnessing what is known as a residual haunting.  Some of the most famous hauntings appear to be residual ones.

A residual haunting is a playback of a past event.  The apparitions involved are not spirits, they are “recordings” of the event.  I believe that this will be the first type of haunting that main stream researchers will recognize and study.  There are numerous theories on how these residual hauntings come to be.  The main one will be discussed here.

Video and audio tapes capture sounds and images on a film of special material that has been oxidized or rusted.  Certain building materials, such as slate used in older castles and stone structures and iron nails used in many older buildings, have properties similar to that of the tapes.  When a traumatic event occurs or a time of heightened emotions, these materials record the event for future playback.  Everything is made up of energy and energy cannot be destroyed.  The materials store the energy created by these traumatic events and plays them back at a later time.  The Tower of London’s ghost of Anne Boleyn and the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall are two famous examples of residual hauntings.  We are not sure what causes the playback of the events, that still remains a mystery.  Is it the right weather conditions, the witness’s energy or sensitivity or some type of energy release?  That is the question that we as researchers are trying to answer.

As I said, in a residual haunting, there is no spirit involved.  This type of event is not dangerous at all so if you ever have the chance to witness one, do so without fear and enjoy it. This type of haunting has to be considered when investigating a haunting.  When my group goes to a haunted location, we spend the first hour split into two teams.  One team maps out the area, noting any EMF readings and Temperature readings so we have guidelines to judge other readings by.  We also make note of how the building is constructed and set up.  The other team is conducting interviews with witnesses.  The questions are setup to find out if the activity sounds like a spirit, poltergeist, residual haunting, etc.  If we feel the activity is a residual haunting we will set up a stakeout in the location the ghost is often seen or heard.  This is the best way to observe and possibly capture evidence of the event.  It may take many return trips and hours of sitting there staring at nothing.  It is very tedious but if it something occurs, you will forget very quickly about all the time you sat waiting for it to happen.

THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH
