“Bermuda Triangle” The truth

The term “Bermuda Triangle” was initially coined by writer Vincent Gaddis in 1964 in the men’s pulp magazine Argosy. Gaddis was also the one who proposed that Atlantis was real and that it was somehow connected to the triangle. When exactly did all the mysteries began? Although news about the unusual disappearances in the Bermuda area was reported in 1952, the earliest allegation was actually made by Edward Van Winkle Jones in an article he published in The Miami Herald on September 17, 1950. Whilst people argue about the exact location of the Bermuda triangle, it is actually not a triangle at all. But a dented trapezium. The Bermuda Dented Trapezium does not really have the same ring to it though.Japan has its own version of the Bermuda Triangle known as Dragon’s Triangle. It is by the island of Miyake, 100km south of Tokyo. In 1952, the Japanese government sent a crew out to investigate but they all disappeared, and so did the rescue crew. There are many claims that when traveling through the Bermuda triangle compasses do not point to true north. This is considered to be one possible reason for all of the lost craft. Christopher Columbus is said to have been the first person to report this phenomenon. There are unsubstantiated reports that pilot Bruce Gernon claims to have lost 28minutes after flying through an electrified time tunnel in the area. There are also unsubstantiated reports that Bruce Gernon was an avid Dr Who fan. Andros Island is one of the islands in the Bahamas in the triangle itself. The U.S. government has AUTEC (Atlantic Underwater Testing and Evaluation Center). Here they test sonar and other military weapons. Predictably, conspiracy theorists think that there may be more to AUTEC than meets the eye. Some people expect the Bermuda Triangle to be small, whereas in fact it covers a huge area of 440,000 miles. There have been several studies and records revealing the exact area pointing to the Bermuda Triangle. However, recent studies and accounts indicate that the triangle is definitely not fixed and its effect can still be experienced even outside the triangle itself. Predictions state that over 1000 lives were lost within the area over the last 100 years. Some reports say that 4 aircraft and 20 yachts go missing in the area every year. This seems like a lot, but then so is 440,000 miles of sea. Many of the accounts are said to be false. For example, Triangle Advocates often site a plane disappearing on a sunny day off the Dakota Coast, however, a look back at newspapers from the day shows absolutely no evidence of this event occurring. Now we all know that due to its prime location for trading and seafaring, the triangle (or dented trapezium), is still one of the most traveled routes in the world.  As a matter of fact, scientific analysis of the statistics shows that ship and plane losses are actually no higher than the world average! WEIRD.Lawrence David Kusche is the author of “The Bermuda Triange Mystery: Solved (1975).” In his book, he argued that many claims from different writers pointing to the disappearance of ships and aircrafts passing through the triangle were exaggerated and unverified. According to him, some disappearanced never even happened including the disappearance of a plane in 1937 when in fact it crashed off Daytona Beach in Florida with hundreds of witnesses, but did not appear on local papers.

Conspiracy theorists are quick to point out that it is very rare that debris or wreckage from lost vehicles are ever found again when they are lost in the triangle. However, considering the depth of the ocean, finding wreckage is never particularly common. What is more, The Gulf Stream passes through the area and is likely to move any wreckage away.

While flying over the Bermuda Triangle in 1970, American pilot Bruce Gernon experiencing something that he can’t quite logically explain. As he was flying, he flew through mysterious donut shaped hole that formed into a swirling cloud tunnel. At the end of the tunnel the pilot witnessed what he could only describe as an electronic fog, which caused his aeronautical instruments to malfunction. Had he just gone through some sort of time portal?

Yes, accounts of weird activity in the area were already being recorded way back during the days of exploration and early travel. In fact, Christopher Columbus wrote about a large fireball dropping from the sky and into the ocean during one of his journeys in the region in 1492. Columbus claimed what he saw caused his compass to malfunction.

During the same year as the Star Tiger’s mysterious disappearance, a Douglas Dakota DC-3 flight took off from Puerto Rico, heading for Miami, Florida. Twenty minutes before landing, the flight disappeared from radars and was never to be seen or heard of again. Two more cases very similar cases have occurred since.

The most famous Bermuda Triangle mystery would have to be the story of the Mary Celeste. Also known as the Ghost Ship, it was found in full sail on December 4, 1872 without a single passenger on board. Could Bermuda Triangle ghosts have been navigating the ship?

This ship had run numerous trips between New York and London, when suddenly in 1981, it mysteriously disappeared. Its crew had actually discovered another empty boat within the Bermuda Triangle, which they decided to drive back to shore. Both boats were lost during a storm and were never to be found again.

The disappearance of the USS Cyclops and its 306 man crew back in 1910 is one of the Bermuda Triangle’s most mysterious incidents. Its disappearance is the single largest loss of life in U.S Naval history not directly related to combat.

Also known as the Devil’s Triangle, the Bermuda Triangle is believed to be the devil’s lair as most of the unusual disappearances in the triangle had no records of human error, equipment failures or natural disasters.

Portrait of legendary Lost Squadron & plane "Flight 19" that supposedly vanished into Bermuda Triangle shortly after WWII.

In 1945 5 American T.B.M. Avenger Bombers were supposedly lost in the area without a trace. To make the situation even weirder, the five rescue craft sent after them also disappeared. Here in this photo is a portrait of the lost squadron of Flight 19.

Joshua Slocum was dubbed as the ery first man to sail solo around the world in 1895. Although he was considered as one of the best sailors of his time, Joshua Slocum apparently disappeared from the face of the earth in 1909 after allegedly passing through the Devil’s Triangle. He sailed with his old fishing boat called “The Spray.”

An in-tact yacht, missing all of its crew was found in 1955. It had survived all of three hurricanes but the crew had completely vanished. Theorists suggest an alien abduction, but then theorists always do.

The American merchant brigantine was found deserted and dishevelled in the Atlantic Ocean on December 4, 1872. No one was on board and the lifeboats were missing. The captain, his wife and their two-year-old daughter, and the rest of the crew were never seen or heard from again.

Ellen Austin ship; On one of its trips, the large American ship came across another vessel sailing in the Bermuda Triangle with no one on board. Some of its crew transferred to the other vessel to try and salvage it, but it never actualized due to a storm. On another trip, the Ellen Austin came across once again with the ship and sent some of its crew to scavenge it. No one was on board and few days later, it disappeared again.

Flight 441 was one of the most successful US military carrier aircraft of all time. The last recorded trace of Flight 441 was 400 miles from the coast inside the Bermuda Triangle. After that, it suddenly vanished in thin air. What’s even more intriguing is that the aircraft had life rafts which would have floated on water if it broke apart on landing. Mysteriously, the pilot never sent any SOS or message.

One of the more plausible theories about the disappearances of ships is that pockets of methane gas trapped underneath the water erupt changing the water density, sending passing ships to the bottom of the ocean.

A 19,000 ton ship, the U.S.S. Cyclops was lost without a trace on March 14th. OK, even the cynic in me admits that that is a little weird. That said, considering it was wartime, many suggested a coup by the seamaster who had political sympathy with Germany. However, Germany has always stood by its position that it had nothing to do with it and no records were discovered after the war.The U.S.S. Cyclops has since popped up in pop culture from Quantum Leap to Scooby Doo. If Scooby Doo has taught us anything it is that there is always a scientific explanation for mysterious goings on. With this in mind, the culprit behind the disappearances is probably a creepy lighthouse owner or a jockish jetski renter with a grudge.
