Devils Island Halifax Harbour

According to some, Devils Island is the location of one of metro’s most famous legends.

… many years ago one of the residents [of Devils Island], old Casper Henneberry, invited some friends for a party on the island. During the festivities, Henneberry went outside for a few moments then came back looking white and shaken. He told his friends that his time was up; he’d seen the Devil “in the form of a halibut.” The next day he was rowing back to the island from Halifax. He was found drowned, his head and shoulders hanging over the side of the boat. Another version of his strange death has it that there were signs of a fight or scuffle on the beach, and that one of the people involved had “cloven hooves,” judging by the prints in the sand.

A second story about Devils Island concerns another of her residents.

… Charles MacDonald , the lightkeeper from 1956 to 1967, awoke one night in his house on the island to find the ghost of his late grandmother standing by his bed. The spectre reached out and seized him by his arms and started pulling. MacDonald, who had a wooden leg, said he put out his good leg to brace himself against this apparition, but his limb went right through her.

 Chebucto Head Lighthouse

The first lighthouse at Chebucto Head was built in 1872 with a steam foghorn just below it. It was replaced by a second tower in 1928. This tower was demolished in 1940 and a new lighthouse and combined keeper’s dwelling was built several hundred metres to the north to make way for a gun battery. In 1967 the light was moved from the house to the a new concrete tower which still stands today. The house remained the keeper’s dwelling until the light was destaffed in the 1990s. The house fell prey to repeated vandalism after the Canadian Coast Guard canceled the lease of tenants who lived in and looked after the house. The house was destroyed by a suspicious fire on May 25, 2004.

No activity has been reported here for many years, most likely because it is now unoccupied, former tenants have reported poltergeist activity and the image of a woman, soaked to the bone with a rope tethered to her waist, walking the cliff top.

Seminary House

Seminary House, Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Seminary House (1878), a fine old frame building with an addition added in 1892, was built to address the concerns of Baptist leaders regarding the lack of educational opportunities for women. The harmless spirit of a flaxen haired girl has been spotted in one of the study rooms here.

 One of our readers writes:

“I was at the seminary hall for the gunn balderson for a soccer tournament on Friday till today and on Friday night one of my team mates left her room with the lights off and the closet door closed and she is the only one with the key and she came back and the closet door was open and her lights were on…

Also I was sitting in the hallway waiting for a friend by myself and I heard a weird noise like when you open your mouth and close it like a (sorry i don’t know how to describe it) then I felt really cold, but when my friend came out it went away. My room is almost under the banister where the young student hung them self. I’m emailing this to you because I seen this on your website I hope this is helpful…”

We received the following report in January 2011. Our thanks goes out to the witness for sharing this experience with us.
“I was doing a bit of online research when I came across your article on Seminary House at Acadia University, and thought that I might have something to add to the story. I have lived in Seminary, and have had some interesting encounter with the ghost who resides there.

On numerous occasions, my roommate and I had heard someone walking outside our door in the early hours of the morning. At first we assumed it was just people wandering the halls. However, on a couple of occasions, we had checked the hall, and there was never anyone there. As well, one night, we heard someone pacing outside the door, and jiggling the handle, as if to try and get into the room. When we checked, there was no one there, though the sounds had continued until just moments before we had opened the door.

On another occasion, I had woken up in the middle of the night because I heard something strange. Our window was broken, and the screws from it had been sitting on the sill. It had sounded as thought someone had been using the screws or something similar to carve into the window, where many previous tenants had carved their names. When I turned around to see what was going on by the window, the sound had stopped, and resumed as soon as I had settled down into my bed. This continued until I had managed to fall asleep again.

Another night, my roommate was working alone in the room, while I had been in class. She claimed that it had felt like someone was standing in the room with her, though she had the door closed and no one had been there. She also claims that she heard something that sounded like someone sighing.

On a fourth occasion, I had come back to the room in the middle of the night after hanging out with friends in another part of the building. As I had been getting ready for bed, I thought I saw something strange over by the door. When I looked again, I could see a dark figure standing by the door. It was there for maybe ten seconds, and then disappeared. Needless to say, I was nervous to be in the room alone at night after that.

We never could figure out why so much seemed to be happening in our room. Though we are in the same area as the woman hung herself, we aren’t the closest, and the room has no connection to the haunting at all. We were just thankful that the ghost never seemed to want to harm us.”

Haliburton House

Haliburton House, Windsor, Nova Scotia

In the 1830s, Judge Thomas Chandler Haliburton wrote his famous “Sam Slick” stories at this elegant wooden villa overlooking extensive grounds. Visit the home of this lawyer, historian and author to get a feel for life in the mid-1800s. This site is an attraction for visitors interested in architecture, period upper class Nova Scotia lifestyles, antique ceramics, historic Nova Scotian houses, and antique timepieces. There are walking trails throughout the extensive grounds. The Judge must have loved it very much here because it is rumored he has never left. His smiling apparition can sometimes be seen coming through the wall by the reception area. Also, there is said to be a spirit of a Scottish soldier who died from a fall on his horse. He can still be seen appearing near the pond on the grounds where he passed away

St. Paul’s Anglican Church

St. Paul’s Anglican Church is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. St. Paul’s is the oldest Protestant place of worship in Canada. Founded by proclamation of King George II in 1749, the building was erected in the summer of 1750 and first opened its doors for services on 2nd September of that year. It has been designated a National Historic Site and the image of a man who perished in an explosion is said to appear here as an etching in a window. The window has been replaced numerous times but his visage always reappears.

 Haunted Terrence Bay Road

The reportedly haunted stretch of Terrence Bay Road is located in Prospect, Halifax County. The spirit said to be encountered here is that of an old, scruffy looking man. Apparently the ghost has leaped out in front of cars during night time hours. Naturally this has caused some near accidents as drivers swerve to avoid hitting the ghost who then vanishes. Perhaps even more unsettling is one report of the ghost appearing in the back-seat of a car although this sounds very much like an urban legend as opposed to an actual haunting.

Antigonish Ghost Lake

Tracadie Lake is located near the village of  Monastery. It is a small body of water overlooking St. George’s Bay, that is rumoured to be haunted by evil spirits (Native lore) and/or the spirits of the soldiers killed in the battle at Beausejour in 1758. The British soldiers had camped near the lake prior to the battle. It is believed that the spirits are returning to the place they last stayed before being killed in battle, hence the nickname “Ghost Lake.”

Citadel Hill

Halifax looking south from atop Citadel Hill – Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, circa 1870.

This is a very historically rich area of the country so it is not surprising that Halifax has many, many, stories of ghosts, and hauntings. Citadel Hill has a reputation for being haunted by the spirit of a Mi’kmaq Native. The spirit has been seen “running” in the are after the sun sets.

Ghostly Glow In Halifax Cemetery

A ghostly-looking glow in a Halifax cemetery has been attributed to a rare European glow worm according to a news item published in The Halifax Herald on December 12th 2009. Two biologists found 122 adult male beetles in traps at Holy Cross and Fort Massey cemeteries and a nearby Queen Street property.
Mr MacIvor was quoted in the news article as stating:
“I’ve looked in a lot of areas, and I’ve never seen one of these before,” he said. “It completely surprised me. It may be in part because I didn’t look in the right places. They’re very cryptic in many ways, and unless you are looking for them in the right fashion, they may be right under your nose and you might not stumble across them.”

He also explained a bit about where they might be sighted within the cemetery:

“Females are almost never seen because they hide in rock crevices, while the males wander along rock walls trying to find them. He said the stone walls and gravestones of the cemetery provide an ideal place for the males to perch and search.”

Christopher Majka and Scott MacIvor’s findings have been published in a research paper in the international journal Zootaxa.

One wonders if this can help to explain some reports of glowing apparitions, spook lights or corpse lights?

Black Phantom Dog In Lower Burlington

“Anyone that knows even just a little bit of folklore or legends has most likely heard or come across stories of black phantom dogs that tend to hang around old crypts and graveyards. These phantom creatures have been said to be anything from the grave owner’s pets to Satan himself, depending on which myth you read. Stories of these dogs are not new, in fact some date back centuries such as the legend of the Black Shuck.
The Black Shuck has many stories associated with it. Depending on what version you read it can appear headless or it can appear to be floating. Most of the stories that we have come across though has described it as being a large black dog with glowing red eyes.”
Excerpt from: Black Shuck research project conducted by PSICAN researchers Jenny Tyrrell, and Penny Dobson

The following is a first hand eyewitness account from a Lower Burlington resident who has encountered a phantom black dog on more than one occasion.

“On several occasions I have experienced this black dog phenomenon. The first time I experienced it was at my grandmothers farmstead when I was 7 or 8, I woke up in bed (I was sleeping in my mothers bed at the time) and I could feel a very large dog panting in my face, that began barking in my face and growling. Quite frightened I asked my mother to get my grandfathers gun, she looked around and couldn’t see or hear anything, even though it was still there barking in my face. That was the first time.

The second time I was walking home from a girlfriends house when I was about 18 or 19 by a field that had flood illumination, and I heard behind me a dog running at me diagonally towards me and barking, naturally. I turned around as I sensed it coming up the ditch and there was nothing.

I’ll add that the farmstead that I experienced it the first time had dog tracks all through the concrete basement, and the concrete floor of the barn. And at this same house my aunt use to get thrown out of her bed by an unseen force.

The house is about 300-400 feet from our family graveyard, there is a large pond nearby too, and when I was a kid my brother and I found another graveyard about a kilometer away in the woods, that looked very old, but we couldn’t make out any dates.

Well I hope some of that made sense…”

A Bedford Haunting

The witness writes:

“When we were living in a house on Kent Ave. near to Hemlock Ravine Park (Bedford NS) we, my entire family, and some friends, experienced the following: A visible ball of light, one room in the house that was ice-cold even during the summer (no A/C was in the house), shadows passing by the doors, family pets freaking out a sudden cold winds coming from a children’s play room, cold air “following” you in the same children’s play room, the shadow of a British soldier “walking” along the wall, eyes in the shadows (this was really creepy) even during the day, and random items missing when you set them down even if you’re the only one home.

It turns out that the Hemlock Ravine Park area has some troubled history and as did the house we lived in. I recently visited the house to say hello to the people living there now and you can tell a huge difference in the “aura” of the house. Experiencing something like this at such a young age makes you more “sensitive” to subsequent hauntings for the rest of your life, I believe.”

Some Englishtown Hauntings

We received the following report in 2010 and includes some local lore. The witness’ experience occurred during the summer at approx 3pm.

“Two friends and I went for a hike to a small local waterfall. There was a guy sitting on a rock fishing in this little waterhole. He was wearing a lumberjack checked (red and black) shirt and overhauls. We asked if he was catching anything. He never answered, after questioning him again if he caught anything he just turned his head and seemed to look at us. We noticed that he had two pupils in his eyes. We left quickly, but returned a few minutes later. He was gone. The place is remote and you can’t just leave that quickly.

I’ve lived in the area all my life and people will say that the whole area is haunted.

The area has a history of things happening. People that live here will tell you different stories about the place. People say that ships use to be able to dock in the small pond that is still here. You can’t access by the bay now, but that someone came ashore here when the Natives use to live in the area. The ones from the ship raped and killed a native girl. That is only one of many stories.  When I mentioned the man at the waterfall to some people, they said a fisherman had drowned down there. That was all I could find out. They say he is still down there. I have no facts to back up anything though.”

We received the following information in January 2011. Our thanks go out to our reader who kindly shared the following with us:

“The area described in Englishtown Haunting is locally referred to as Spooky Hollow, in what is commonly called Black Head. The area has a few stories, one not really backing the other. However, eerie none the less. I have personally experienced uneasiness in the area while hunting, to the point where I readied (loaded with the hammer back) my shotgun, not the safest of hunting methods…as I was trained otherwise. I have never witnessed anything other than the eerie felling. People familiar with the area have been turned around and lost which if you knew the area is odd as all one has to do is to go down hill to be corrected and the local hunters are VERY familiar with the area???The Ponds mentioned are locally called Big and Little Pond, maps refer to them as Big and Little Oyster Pond as I believe there was oyster cultivation at one time. Pollock (a ground fish similar to Cod fish) at one time used to enter the big pond as they are both tidal this is an oddity in its own right and could be caught by fishing rod (I am not sure that this still happens). The falls mentioned I believe is one of a series of 6 or 7 on a brook called Big MacDonald Brook that feeds into Big Pond. There are lots of lore and stories including Faeries, Glooscap, glowing water, ghosts and ghouls which can also be connected to a Sea Cave at Cape Dauphin 5 or so Km North East, known as the Faerie Hole (By Europeans) or Glooscap’s Cave by native Mik’Maq.

I believe there were Hanoverian Germans that settled near the area as well as a family called Smith as one of the clearings (grown in now)used to be called Smith’s Farm, Orchards can be found on a hill overlooking the pond this is where the Smith Farm clearing was. Most folk will not go down there alone, I have been many times myself, but really do not relish it. I have been to Buckhill in Ontario and liken the feeling to what I experienced there.”

Ross Thompson House

The following report was sent in to us in 2011, but the actual date of the experience was 1994.

“I was at the Ross Thompson House ( a museum) with my friends after school and we were exploring the museum as the rest of the tour group had gone on elsewhere. We were very interested in seeing the area in the basement where they used to churn butter as opposed to staring at the numerous barrels of dry goods in the store area.

I went first and went around the corner to the stairs (more like a ladder) that led to the basement and when I got to the top of the stairs I looked down and saw a man lying at the bottom of the stairs in period dress with a doctor and nurse? (they were all in period dress but so where all the employees of the museum) kneeling over him.

The doctor had an old fashioned doctor’s bag next to him and was looking into it for something, just then i must have made a noise because the nurse? turned to look at me and said something but I couldn’t hear any words, I just sensed that I should go get help.  I had thought that a staff member had fallen off the very steep steps and injured themselves.  I turned and went no more than 3 steps and ran into one of my friends who wanted to go help we turned around and went back and there was nothing there.  No evidence that anyone had previously been there either.

I asked around but no one knew anything about it, when we went downstairs I had a sickening feeling and had to leave, there was no one down there.  I hadn’t been gone from the corridor that led to that staircase at all so no one could’ve come up and no one had gone down and none of the staff knew anything about anyone falling and getting hurt.
I have talked to many people who have had different apparitions in that same museum and we are all pretty sure that it is probably because the entire museum has been restored to the period settings that it probably draws the energy.  I have since had many experiences in my own home (despite 6 moves each home has held experiences)  and am not sure if that is related to the above incident or not.”

Spirit Of A Beloved Son

“My 21 yr. old son died in an accident in our own yard in May 2007.  A few days later I was in the basement (where he and his friends always hung out). It was evening and something caught my eye in the reflection of the window.  When I did a double-take and looked again, I saw not my own reflection, but that of my smiling son with is head full of curls standing there with his favorite hat on.  I turned around quickly, but there was no one behind me.  Shortly after that on numerous occasions, I smelled marijuana as I descended the stairs into the basement.  My son and his friends occasionally smuggled one into the house and I would warn them “not inside the house”.  By the time I got to the bottom of the stairs, the smell had faded.  My brother experienced this same sensation when he was looking for something on my son’s workbench.  My daughter and I often heard his bedroom door close, but when we went to investigate, found it wide open and nothing disturbed.  Our son’s kitten would sit at the top of the steps and look down as if he could see someone.  We also heard my son’s heavy work boots on the stairs many times, just as we had when he was alive.  There were other incidents as well.  I often felt his presence in the basement.  These things went on for many months, then suddenly stopped. My son loved life and one moment of carelessness cost him his life.  He was not finished here on earth and that’s why I think he continued to hang around for so long.  I honestly don’t think he knew he had died.  My heart still aches for my only son, but I like to think he is finally at peace”

The Waverley Inn

We received the following report of ghostly going-ons at the Waverley Inn in April 2011. The actual incident reportedly occurred in the previous year:

“My friend and I spent a night at The Waverley Inn in Halifax for her birthday. We were staying there because we had heard it was haunted and wanted to see what we would experience. We were staying in the Oscar While room which is located on the 3 floor of the building (not including the basement). As soon as we entered the building you could tell there was something unnatural there. As soon as we got settled we decided to explore. We hadn’t seen any other guests so far as we walked around. The first place we went was the hallway. It was much more dimly lit than the other hallways and that gave it a creepy vibe. As we walked around, a door handle on one of the doors started to rattle as if someone was about to open the door. My friend and I quickly started to walk away thinking someone was about to leave their room. We lingered for a bit and realized no one had left the room. Later we came back to the door and realized it had no room number and was much smaller than the others. It was a closet and was locked. Later on that night we talked to the man behind the desk and he commented that there was only one other room being rented out in the building and they were on the floor below us. Also there were no maids in the building at the time. No one had even been up in that hallway that night.”

Caledonia Mills Fire Spook

According to the official town folklore page:

“In the county of Antigonish there is a place called Caledonia Mills. Alexander and Mary MacDonald and their 16 year-old adopted daughter Mary-Ellen who lived in a farm house in this small community.

In January of 1922, a fire started in part of their house. Oddly it was not near their fireplace or wood stove. Once extinguished another erupted in an empty room at the other end of the home. The family was totally puzzled. Other fires materialized mysteriously. Wet towels and the patches of wallpaper would burst into flames. It did not take the family long to realize that there was something unnatural occurring. With the help of their neighbors they began to guard the house, hoping to catch an intruding arsonist. Fires continued to appear out of nowhere, but no arsonist was ever caught. In total there were 30 unexplained fires.

Fires were not the only unsolved occurrence at the farm. The MacDonalds would enter their barn to find ashes in the stored milk and all the animals moved to different locations within the barn. Soon the family was persuaded to leave the home while the local authorities investigated. When word of the mysteries got out reporters arrived to get the scoop. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was invited to investigate.
The MacDonald’s daughter Mary-Ellen, came to be known as “Mary-Ellen Spook”. She moved to Central Canada and no further incidents occurred.”

Source information, and official town pages

In May 2011 we received the following report that implies that perhaps odd things might still be occur in the vicinity of this famous Canadian poltergeist case:

“This happened when I was in my early teens but it has stayed with me all these years (I am now 41). Myself, 2 uncles and a friend were coming home from Antigonish and decided to take the other way home so they could show me another way home (Erinville) and how certain roads connect (as I was a new driver and they were showing me a shortcut home from teen dances that took place in the Intervale). We left the paved road and were on the dirt road. The night was clear with a full moon and you could clearly see the stars. All of a sudden we hit a huge thick fog that came out of nowhere. We all were chilled to the bone and had goosebumps. The boys seemed a bit freaked but wouldn’t say a word as to why until we arrived at my grandparents. Once we were in the house they all were white as ghosts and thats when I was told about the Mary Ellen Spook Farm.”

South Halifax Haunting

We received the following report in April 2011, but the event described occurred several years ago:

“This had happened to me several years ago…..I’ve always had an interest/curiosity in the supernatural.  At the time i was living in an old Victorian home in the south end of Halifax NS.  The lower floor of the home was separated by the main hallway by two enormously beautiful apartments with fireplaces in all rooms…the upper levels were small quarters/apartments sometimes sharing bathrooms.  Upon research from the elderly landlord of this house, it’s history was of a family home that had servants quarters in the upper areas of the home.  The basement of the home which I for some reason found frightening but fascinating…had rows of bells attached to the rafters that were just below holes in the ceiling leading to the floors above…..I’d gathered that this was for the purpose of the homeowners to call to their servants…?

The tenants of the home had always talked about strange happenings in the house..and I’d experienced nothing other than just an unusual feel about the house..very peculiar.  One night while in bed I was awoken to the figure of a tall slender man standing in the doorway of the bedroom.  He appeared to float (not walk) to the left side of my bed and stood over me.  I couldn’t see any facial features, but could tell that he was tall and slender, with dark hair parted to the side…he was wearing a white dress shirt and black pants…but i couldn’t see his face…he then said to me “tell me about our salvation” and as he said this i was scrambling to the other side of the bed…and then he disappeared.  I don’t recall finding him personally threatening…but i was certainly terrified by this circumstance….it seemed he was looking for information from me…and that was it.

I never experienced anything notable after that point other than just the strange feeling the house had.  Soon after that strangely enough one of the tenants died tragically in one of the downstairs apartments…it was a ghastly and memorable time for me….and the house was sold by it owner and the new owners renovated the entire building into condos……I’ve always wondered since if the new occupants have experienced anything unusual.  I know the other tenants in the building when I was there had strange things happen to them that I can’t recall exact details….but it was often mentioned…”.

Digby Ghost Report

The following report was received in 2011 and our thanks go out to the witness for sharing these experiences with us. Hopefully others who have experienced or are currently experiencing similar things can take comfort in knowing they are not alone.

“We bought and renovated an older house that had been vacant for many years. Over the years my family has had numerous experiences. When the children were small they would see a man upstairs. My self and babysitters would hear the back door open and someone walk across the floor, haul out a chair and sit down then a thump . My sister and I smelled coffee perking and it kept getting stronger. When I thought it was done I went into the kitchen and there was no coffee. I asked my sister if she had smelled the coffee perking she said yes it smells good.I told her there was no coffee and that I had thought she had perked a pot. She thought I had and was joking and had to check for herself. Last year I kept hearing a bird flying in my upstairs hall .It kept hitting the wall and falling to the floor.I went to rescue it but have never found it.All of my windows had screens on them the bedroom doors were closed. I thought it may have gotten in when they removed a screen in one room when they were running a wire for internet but the screen was back in place and it could not have gotten out. These are a few of the things. It used to scare my children and made my sister uneasy but it never really scared me. At times I just thought someone wanted to let me know it was there.

I did ask a psychic once and she told me my house wasn’t really haunted that someone was just watching over me and the children. My elderly neighbour told me what I was describing with someone coming in the back door was a previous tenant who had died in the house. He said he came in the back door and hauled a chair out and sat down and asked his wife to quick get his shoes off he was dying and dropped dead . He told me my table was in the same place that theirs had been. I moved the table and haven’t heard it since but as it wasn’t a regular occurrence am not sure if that is why it stopped. I am not really sure what to believe but it doesn’t frighten me.”

A Family Haunting

The witness writes:

“As a child, I would repeatedly tell my mother that when I was playing in the basement of our home, that something was “with” me. I always felt a presence, would see objects move and would test her by outlining objects in chalk, lock the door and not let anyone enter. When I would open the door, the objects would be 1-2 inches out of the outline I had made. Finally, my mom told me that it was just my great-grandmother looking over me, and that other family members had seen/felt her presence over the years.

She had actually moved residences!

Right around the time I started telling my mother about my experiences, my grandfather told her that his experiences with his mother had ended.
I have had her move objects, repeatedly play a single key on her old piano, communicate via Ouija board and one day found her standing next to me! Her apparition faded, but shortly after, my disbelieving father admitted to my mother that he saw her standing in his bedroom doorway.
After my mother died of cancer, my great-grandmother communicated with me and when I asked her if I would ever see my mother, she answered “No,  she is at rest.” After my father remarried, we had some unexplained occurrences at our new house, to which my step-mother was quite disturbed by.
In all, 5 family members saw her full-body apparition over the years.”

Dartmouth General Hospital

We received the following report in February 2012:

“Good morning, I was just wanting to inquire to see if you had ever heard anything on possible spirits at the Dartmouth General in Nova Scotia?

I had to stay there for a few nights mid December 2011 and around 11 at night something or someone sat on the end of my bed leaving an impression, I watched the sheets crinkle and checked to see where my feet were since I thought maybe I had done it but there was a good 2 feet or more at the end of my bed that was free.

I wasn’t frightened just wondering who it might have been, it seemed as if they were sitting there watching over me or trying to comfort me, I asked the nurses about it the next morning and they had said that they have heard others tell them the exact same story. They believe that someone checks in on the patients and seems to be a harmless being which I had already believed.

Just wondering if you may know anything about any spirits or anything there, I was on the 3rd floor.”

This is the first report we have come across from this particular hospital, however hospitals, hospices, and nursing facilities are very well represented as a whole as places that appear to have their fair share of ghostly or haunting activity. Why this may be the case is open to discussion, and speculation.

New Glasgow Smoking Apparition

After signing papers for our first Mortgage, my wife and I left our Lawyers office, located in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Once I hit the top of the stairs, I began to smell a tobacco pipe smoke, I remember asking my wife if she could smell anything, but she didn’t. As we were approximately half way down the stairs, I noticed a man, dressed in old almost Civil war era clothing building a brick wall, smoking a pipe. He never looked at me, he just kept looking out onto the street. The downstairs was undergoing construction. As i approached the bottom of the stairs he was gone! My wife saw nothing! The Current building only dates back to the 1930’s, however the wall that my friend was building was 2-3 feet inside the present structure.

Dartmouth Commons

We received the following report in 2013, but the events described occurred in 1969.

As a boy, I enjoyed spending time at the Dartmouth Children’s Library during the summer holiday. To get to the library from my house, the shortest walk was through the Dartmouth Commons through a graveyard. One beautiful clear summer day, as I was walking alone through the graveyard, I saw a dog sitting next to a grave marker by the main path. Being a sucker for petting dogs, I turned aside to see this dog. The dog was a very old Springer Spaniel. As I bent to pet the dog, I felt uneasy because the dog , staring at me , didn’t move or make any sound. Afraid that the dog might snap at me , I pulled back and started walking away. Wary that the dog might snap at my heels, after four paces ,I looked back to watch the dog, but there was no dog ! A perfectly clear sunny day, no dog, no movement, nothing ! Curious, I moved back to see if the dog was moving away or hiding behind a grave marker but found nothing. Startling stuff for a ten-year old, not a SCARY story, just a small but true tale of something not normal.

Carriage House Haunting Darmouth

“My first experiences with the Carriage House happened a couple of different times. The first time my friend was planning on hanging out with some of the people who lived there so I Joined. This was the first time I ever met those people and went into the house. I really didn’t have prior knowledge of the place just heard a few things but always thought they were most likely being a bit dramatic about it. The second I stepped into that place I was floored. I felt like a weight went from my chest to all the way down to my stomach. We then sat there not talking about “it cause I guess they had been for the past few days a lot and the activity was getting worse for them. While we sat at the kitchen table I could see somewhat down the hallway towards the back of the house. I didn’t see anything but I could for sure feel something watching us. We then heard a few noises that could not be ignored. One of the people who lived there took me upstairs where I guess most of the activity happened. I was walking with the person that lived there along with one of my friends, my friend they said he could not go any further and rushed down the stairs. At that moment I didn’t feel anything but that only lasted a second. I then walked/ looked down a hallway that had an exit sign. The person who lived there said something to me so I looked back at him and then I heard a click noise so I looked back down the hallway and at the end was a dark figure and it was not a good feeling. I grew up with lots of paranormal activity so usually it doesn’t bother me but I did not like the feeling that entity was giving me. I rushed downstairs and calmed myself down. For the rest of the night I could sense something by the front stairs. When I went home later that night, I got home and got ready for bed. My cat who always sleeps in my bed with me just stood by my bedroom door looking at it, just staring no meowing or anything and this is very strange behaviour for her. That night I did not get much sleep due to what happened. First the cat wouldn’t move from that spot just staring at my closed door and also when ever I was just about to fall asleep a bang from the hallway would happen like someone was banging on the wall right outside my door, then usually a half an hour after that when I was almost asleep I would hear a whispered voice calling my name, and this went back and forth between those two. The next day I went around my place declaring that this was my place and they had no right to be there and told them to go back to where they came from and they were not welcomed at my place. After that things went back to normal. The second time things happened when I was there was when a party was going on , it wasn’t a big party or anything about 10 people. Everyone was out on the deck chilling or having a smoke and there was no wind at all. The music speakers were on the stove, and they were solid speakers that stood perfect on the stove. All of a sudden the speakers fell down and a few of the red solo cups went flying halfway across the room! I do know at one point it was an orphanage and half way house. It could have been more but not too sure.”

Campfire Apparitions

“My husband, myself and our two little dogs were enjoying a campfire on the beach near Eatonville n.s. (October 13 2013 10:15pm)  We saw a truck coming down the road and slow down for the bridge.  So we were looking towards it, when I then looked straight ahead down the shore a short ways, and I saw 3 people all dressed in white walking towards the water.  At the same time I saw them, our two little dogs started barking and going towards them.  Just as I said, “look” to my husband, he turned from looking at the truck, and I no longer saw them.  The dogs were still barking and he told them to stop.  I explained to him what I had seen and we were both amazed that there were no signs of them, and where could they hide as the only place they could have went to was the water which was straight ahead of them.  I told him that I had thought maybe the truck had let them off before going down to the beach.  He had not seen them at all as he had kept his attention on the truck, which did not stop.  We looked for signs of them, but there were none.  Also the next morning we looked for tracks of them or some explanation.  All that I saw was two ropes coming up out of the sand. ”
